As important now as when it was written

The protests and revolutions sweeping the Middle East in recent weeks might lead one to conclude that this manuscript (written mostly in 2004 and updated in 2009) is already out of date. Not so! It is more important than ever that we understand the underlying definitions, aspirations and interferences that have shaped this part of the world and that offer clues to a way out of the morass. Soltes provides a background that richly weaves ancient influences (the rise of Islam, the Crusades, the advent of Arab nationalism, etc.) with detailed analysis of contemporary personalities and events. He offers a framework that reveals to the western reader the humanity behind the headlines and offers practical suggestions for untangling the complex web. If you know nothing about this area of the world, buy this book and read it. If you already know everything there is to know, buy it as well because you will be challenged (whether you agree with him or not) to make novel associations and fresh conclusions. And especially, if you know anyone in a position to influence US policy in the Middle East, buy this book and put it into their hands!

Untangling the Web, Reaching towards Hope

What is amazing, is that this book is not devoid of hope. On the contrary, readers of this book will want to cry out to Middle Easterners and everyone else on the planet to reach for it with their minds and hearts in unison. In Soltes' book the complex web is indeed untangled; its many layers of centuries old misunderstanding laid out like an enormous net across the desert sand. As you read through this book so much about the ancient enmity becomes clear and a strange kind of relief bubbles up like a fresh spring of water in the hot dry sand. New ideas, potential solutions wash through our minds as we think, "Only if". But these only ifs become the possibility of creating something different, together, in the 21st century. We begin to see a way out. If enough of us read Soltes' book, he will help us get there. We can't afford to pass this book by.

As such, We Are Your Sisters provides a panoramic portrait of black women's lives, presenting the words of laundresses and maids, of writers and teachers. You'll find the testimonies of slave women, as collected in the 1920s and '30s by the Federal Writers Project, on such matters as work, courtship, and family life; letters from slave women that include moving appeals for husbands to save them from slave traders; and first-person accounts of women's resistance to slavery. There are also letters from women such as Rosetta Douglass Sprague, the daughter of Frederick Douglass; accounts of the doings of upper-class blacks in the years following the Civil War; and excerpts from the diary of Frances Rollin, author of a biography of black activist and Civil War soldier Martin Delany.

This book is better than reality tv. It is a collection of real life accounts, diary entries, and pictures of black women in America during slavery and after emancipation.
It includes excerps from slaves, doctors, teachers, writers, womens rights and black activists, maids, cooks, laundresses, etc.
It gives a real life account of what was really going on in the 1800's in black america.
The book made me laugh, cry, get angry, etc., while reading it I went through a barrage of emotions.
Among its entertainment values, it is also very educational and informative. I had no idea that there were black female lawyers and Doctors in the 1840's in the US. Some of these people were the first female lawyers and Doctors in the US.
By and far it is good reading whether for fun or information.

trashy chick-lit, just the way it should be

I'm one of those people that judges a book by its cover, so the reason I picked this up off the shelf was just that. I was looking for something girly, easy to read. One thing that the author does very well is describe feelings about relationships, love and infidelity with complete honesty. Sometimes I saw myself in what she described, without ever having been conscious of it before.

One thing she doesn't do so well is write the parts of the man. It still feels like a woman writing with some "hard" swear words thrown in. I didn't get a sense of being inside a guy's head.

This book gets three stars from me- it is a relatively entertaining "chick-lit" genre read, but nothing extraordinary here!!

About the Author
Loren W. Christensen has been involved in law enforcement since 1967. He began as a 21-year-old military policeman in the US Army, serving stateside and as a patrolman in Saigon, Vietnam during the war. At 26, he joined the Portland, Oregon Police Bureau working a variety of jobs to include street patrol, gang enforcement, intelligence, body guarding, and academy trainer, retiring after 25 years. He has trained various security agencies in arrest and control techniques, and officer survival. After retiring from police work, Loren began a fulltime career as a writer, now with over 50 books in print with five publishers, as well as magazine articles, and blog pieces. He edited a police newspaper for nearly seven years. His non fiction include books on the martial arts, police work, PTSD, mental preparation for violence, meditation, nutrition, exercise, and various subcultures, to include prostitution, street gangs, skid row, and riots. His fiction series Dukkha was a finalist in the prestigious USA Best Book Awards. As a martial arts student and teacher since 1965, Loren has earned a total of 11 black belts in three arts and was inducted into the Masters Hall of Fame in 2011.

Like the paranormal itself, this book is as unexpected as it is fascinating!

So when I first heard that Loren "martial arts author" Christensen was putting out a book about ghosts and UFOs and whatnot, it was a definite, "wait... what?" moment. What I've always enjoyed about Christensen's books are his ability to take very complex concepts (such as martial arts, meditation, nutrition) and filter them into a simple and understandable concept. No fluff and, more importantly, no mysticism. So this one kind of came out of blue.

All that said, if you are a fan of Christensen's other books, trust me and check this one out. Christensen takes his vast law enforcement experience, gathers a team of folks with similar experience, and presents a collection of stories that will both interest you and possibly even creep the daylights out of you. This is a side of the law enforcement world you have never seen, heard of, and most likely have never even considered.

Even if you, like me, are a skeptic of ghosts and aliens and everything related, give this a try. At worst you will be very entertained. And, who knows, maybe it will make you wonder if there really is something lurking in the dark...

Best book I've read on the subject. Fascinating and sometimes chilling, there is enough variety here to hook people of every interest. I really liked the UFO story and the stories about people vanishing in front of the officers.
