The Reason for God: Belief in an Age of Skepticism, by Timothy Keller

Timothy Keller, the founding pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City, addresses the frequent doubts that skeptics and non-believers bring to religion. Using literature, philosophy, anthropology, pop culture, and intellectual reasoning, Keller explains how the belief in a Christian God is, in fact, a sound and rational one. To true believers he offers a solid platform on which to stand against the backlash toward religion spawned by the Age of Skepticism. And to skeptics, atheists, and agnostics he provides a challenging argument for pursuing the reason for God.

The remarkable New York Times bestseller by the "C.S. Lewis for the 21st century" (Newsweek).

A New York Times bestseller people can believe in-by a "pioneer of the new urban Christians" (Christian Today magazine).

From Publishers Weekly
In this apologia for Christian faith, Keller mines material from literary classics, philosophy, anthropology and a multitude of other disciplines to make an intellectually compelling case for God. Written for skeptics and the believers who love them, the book draws on the author's encounters as founding pastor of New York's booming Redeemer Presbyterian Church. One of Keller's most provocative arguments is that all doubts, however skeptical and cynical they may seem, are really a set of alternate beliefs. Drawing on sources as diverse as 19th-century author Robert Louis Stevenson and contemporary New Testament theologian N.T. Wright, Keller attempts to deconstruct everyone he finds in his way, from the evolutionary psychologist Richard Dawkins to popular author Dan Brown. The first, shorter part of the book looks at popular arguments against God's existence, while the second builds on general arguments for God to culminate in a sharp focus on the redemptive work of God in Christ. Keller's condensed summaries of arguments for and against theism make the scope of the book overwhelming at times. Nonetheless, it should serve both as testimony to the author's encyclopedic learning and as a compelling overview of the current debate on faith for those who doubt and for those who want to re-evaluate what they believe, and why. From Booklist
*Starred Review* Keller has just made life harder for preaching atheists such as Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, and Christopher Hitchens. For with this tightly reasoned defense of faith, he challenges the evangelists of doubt on their own ground. One by one, the arguments for unbelief fall before Keller’s unrelenting logic. The claim that science has disproved religion comes in for particular scrutiny, as Keller deflects the antireligious syllogism that converts evolutionary theory into an obituary for orthodoxy. Keller even turns the tables on rationalists, adducing compelling evidence for scriptural doctrines, including the physical resurrection of Christ. And although Keller frankly acknowledges that inquisitors have justified atrocities as religious duties, he nonetheless traces the modern concept of human rights back to religious roots and exposes the fragility of such rights when shorn from those roots. We start down the road to Hitler’s death camps and Stalin’s gulag, he warns, whenever we refuse to recognize in fellow humans the divine image of God. But by recognizing that image, Keller affirms, we open sacred possibilities not only for redemption in the hereafter but also for social justice here and now. Readers expecting Keller to deliver the usual pious bromides may experience a profound shock to their spiritual and social complacency. --Bryce Christensen

One of the Best Christian Thinkers!
By KTF
I have been disappointed by so many Christian books I read- especially those that try to "prove" God. Being well acquainted with logic and rhetoric, the blatant logical fallacies often times presented as "proofs" is an embarrassment to Christian intellect. Then I read this book.

Tim doesn't try to "prove" Christianity or that God exists- no one can do this. But he makes excellent, well articulated and reasoned arguments for why it is reasonable to believe in God. If you are looking for theology, this is not your book (this book is much more philosophical if anything). But if you are looking for a book that argues the rationale for belief in God from a reasonable perspective, this is your book! Very highly recommended!

One of my top books in 2015.
By Mamaco
I read this from the library last year and it was in the top five of all the books I read for 2015 (~40). In fact, I'd recommend it for Christians and non-Christians alike; Tim Keller does a marvelous job of talking through why it is intellectually honest to believe in God. What I like about this book (and Tim Keller in general) is that he doesn't claim to be making a foolproof argument--he gives thoughts for you to consider and ponder and put together on your own. I purchased this because I wanted it as part of my home library and to re-read again. I'd strongly, strongly recommend this book.

Whether a skeptic or believer - read this book!
By Jamie from Books and Beverages
Why hello modern day C.S. Lewis. I mean, for real Timothy Keller. For real. This is by far one of the best Christian apologetic books I've read in a while. It's an easy read, yet so many great points to think about and ponder. Whether a skeptic or believer, you should read this book! I believe a decision about faith is too important a matter to not think about it.

Here's the list of chapters so you have a better idea of what he covers. The first part he address is common arguments against Christianity and the second is reasons for belief in Christianity.

Part 1: The Leap of Doubt

There Can't Be Just One True Religion
How Could a Good God Allow Suffering?
Christianity is a Straitjacket
The Church is Responsible for So Much Injustice
How Can a Loving God Send People to Hell?
Science Has Disproved Christianity
You Can't Take the Bible Literally

Part 2: The Reasons for Faith

The Clues of God
The Knowledge of God
The Problem of Sin
Religion and the Gospel
The (True) Story of the Cross
The Reality of the Resurrection
The Dance of God
There's lots of quotes to share, so let's dive right in!

"Everyone has faith in something....What is religion then? It is a set of beliefs that explain what life is all about, who we are, and the most important things that human beings should spend their time doing."

"At the very heart of [Christians'] view of reality was a man who died for his enemies, praying for their forgiveness."

"Love is the most liberating freedom-loss of all. Human beings are most free and alive in relationships of love [whether for a friend or romantic love]."

Regrading injustice: "When people have done injustice in the name of Christ they are not being true to the spirit of the one who himself died as a victim of injustice and who called for the forgiveness of his enemies. When people give their lives to liberate others as Jesus did, they are realizing the true Christianity that Martin Luther King, Jr., Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and other Christian voices have called for."

"If there is no God, then there is no way to say any one action is "moral" and another "immoral" but only "I like this." If that is the case, who gets the right to put their subjective, arbitrary moral feelings into law?"

On the resurrection: "The resurrection also puts a burden of proof on it's nonbelievers. It is not enough to simply believe Jesus did not rise from the dead. You must then come up with a historically feasible alternative explanation for the birth of the church. You have to provide some other plausible account for how things began...If the resurrection of Jesus happened, however, that means there's infinite hope and reason to pour ourselves out for the needs of the world."

So now that I just did a quote slam, what do you think? Have you read any of Keller's writings? Any of the quotes resonate? I would love to hear your thoughts!

Concise, well-written, complete guide to Southern Spain
By Globalaza
Well thought out, comprehensive, travel guide that is the same dimensions as the Time Out Guides (which I love) so they are perhaps slightly too big for an average pants pocket (e.g. Top Ten/Wallpaper), but not bulky and hard to travel with (Insight/DK/Eyewitness/NatGeo/Fodors and some Framers). Fortunately, this Lonely Planet strikes a good balance between planning the trip and what to do once there. Sometimes Time Out is focused on getting there (planning/history) vs. walking you through a typical short vacation/tourist visit.

I could quibble with the organization of the Andalusia guide. For instance, it seems that "getting there" info should be first vs toward the back of the book and separated into "Need to Know" and "Transport" (these items should be co-located in the front); more color photos would be helpful; more info for LGBT travelers, including festivals/events, shopping and nightlife; and a better balance of listings between low-end and high-end shopping (as well as mens/womens shopping, furniture, antiques, art and hidden gems).

Buy overall this is a good comprehensive guide to Southern Spain for an occasional traveler.

Using visual examples of songwriting techniques, this book teaches guitarists to write better songs. The CD demonstrates how the examples sound, and it includes dozens of chord progressions, evolving melodies and structures, and harmony effects, making the book especially useful to those who don't read music. The book starts with basic chords, describes how to write a song with simple elements, then gradually develops more complex structures. By seeing and hearing step-by-step examples of the song craft, the reader can easily learn the secrets of songwriting.

CD is a gem!
By reviewer
I didn't touch the cd until after I had read the book. My reasoning wasn't to save the best for last. I just didn't expect to hear anything useful since I would be playing the examples on my keyboard while reading through the topics. I was completely satisfied with what the book alone did for me. I'd been writing for a while and knew much of the information presented already, but what Rooksby did was organize my tool drawer. It's mainly a book on the use of chords as the basis for writing popular songs in any genre, from the most basic to the most colorful. He shows us the resource we have in these chords and how popular songs have used them and will continue to use them. By the end of the book you really feel like writing, because much of the mystery about the craft has been resolved.

Then you pop in the cd and listen to no less than "20" beautifully recorded pop tracks(sans vocals) written in various styles which apply the book's teachings. But you aren't just listening. You're following along with the cd section of the book, which shows every chord used and an accounting of every measure in every track recorded, along with comments on the most significant events.

I came away with a much greater appreciation of popular song and its potential.

Simple, Clean and Very Helpful
By David W. Opderbeck
This is a book about chord progressions and song structures used in popular music. It is basic, but in a good way. I'm a pretty experienced songwriter, and I already intuitively do much of what the book describes, but now I know why what I do works or doesn't work, and also have a palette of new ideas. The layout and graphics are excellent, and I also appreciate the glossy paper stock -- the publishing work is beautifully done. If you enjoy writing songs, particularly if you're a guitar player who enjoys writing songs, and you want to better understand the foundations of popular song structure conventions, I heartily recommend this book.

i can't praise rikky's books enough. i have all of them (at least the ones that are still in print). he knows his stuff. get this book, and its companion "how to write songs on guitar", and you're well on your way to making great music. he cites The Smiths and other great bands, in all of his books. now any author who uses the Smiths as an example of songwriting technique is aces in my book. seriously, the amount of knowledge you will get from his books (this one especially) is priceless. you'll never get writer's block again. GET HIS BOOKS. no others come close. -chris

Hegel's Ethics of Recognition, by Robert R. Williams

In this significant contribution to Hegel scholarship, Robert Williams develops the most comprehensive account to date of Hegel's concept of recognition (Anerkennung). Fichte introduced the concept of recognition as a presupposition of both Rousseau's social contract and Kant's ethics. Williams shows that Hegel appropriated the concept of recognition as the general pattern of his concept of ethical life, breaking with natural law theory yet incorporating the Aristotelian view that rights and virtues are possible only within a certain kind of community.

He explores Hegel's intersubjective concept of spirit (Geist) as the product of affirmative mutual recognition and his conception of recognition as the right to have rights. Examining Hegel's Jena manuscripts, his Philosophy of Right, the Phenomenology of Spirit, and other works, Williams shows how the concept of recognition shapes and illumines Hegel's understandings of crime and punishment, morality, the family, the state, sovereignty, international relations, and war. A concluding chapter on the reception and reworking of the concept of recognition by contemporary thinkers including Derrida, Levinas, and Deleuze demonstrates Hegel's continuing centrality to the philosophical concerns of our age.

first 110 pages are gold
By barryb
I strongly recommend this book, but I want to say a few things. I think I have an above average understanding of Hegel and I found the first 100 pages difficult. In the first 110 pages, Williams defines the concept of "recognition". this is the most important part of the book. Take your time, study this section slowly. He doesn't take short-cuts; so there is a ton of information. The next 100 pages deal with "morality", and the remainder of the book deals with "ethical; substance". this is post-graduate level, intelligent writing. Williams opens a concept that usually doesn't get detailed analysis. I took my time and reaped the benefit. Tremendous book. Get it for sure.

"I can guarantee you. Read this book and you'll never look at Elvis the same way again!" -- Douglas Brode, author of Elvis Cinema and Popular Culture.

In 1970, singer Elvis Presley secretly met with President Richard Nixon. This new comedic novel imagines that Presley became a Central Intelligence Agency operative, eventually moving up through the ranks to become a skilled assassin.

Presented in an oral history fashion, the book tells us about Presley's secret transformation by the people who knew him best.

Did he fake his death in 1977? Was Presley involved with the Watergate scandal? The Iran hostage crisis? Communicating with aliens?

Read this book to find out the answers to these and many more questions.

Hunka hunka burning spy
By D. Hayes
I love these types of books but they are rarely done well. Oral history style, historical mash ups. The real sad part is there aren't that many of them because they are difficult to write. Andy Rausch has seen to that, though. As a minor Elvis fan (I don't dislike anything the man has done but don't salivate) I think the true success of this book is how Rausch keeps it relevant to non-fanatics. The King is represented well and true to at least the public perception of the icon and the procedural/action material works on two levels: viscerally paced and judiciously edited. I really enjoyed the book and it is a unique little entry in the burgeoning genre of 'famous people do cool things.' There will be inevitable comparisons to Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and World War Z but they are apples and oranges. Elvis Presley: CIA Assassin has heart. It is more comparable to Joe Lansdale's/Don Coscarelli's Bubba Ho Tep... which is a huge compliment.

What a fun read! Hilarious!
By Jannie Pie
I'm an Elvis fan, so I was really looking forward to reading this. It sounded like a hoot, and it is! It's a fictitious piece, presented as an oral history, and while those can be confusing at times, that's not the case here. I didn't have to refer back to the character list at all. The narrative was easy to follow. The storyline developed well. The pace of the book was so quick and clever that I had a hard time putting it down. And it is HILARIOUS!!! I don't want to say too much or give anything away. I hope you'll treat yourself to a good time and lots of laughs and read this. I'm glad that I did. Enjoy!

Wacky and wild
By Sharon Bayliss
Told in mockumentary style (what's the book word for that?), Elvis Presley CIA Assassin tells the story of an Elvis who dreams of being a CIA assassin, and is willing to do anything to achieve this dream. The story is written as a fake non-fiction story from the perspectives of the people closest to Elvis, and includes fake transcripts and letters. All in all, it's very unique.

The story is hilarious, clever, and the author has a great voice. It's just so creative. Not like anything I've read before. I will say, the Elvis the author creates is a despicable psychopath, and I did find his behavior tiring at times. It's tough to have a book centered around such an unlikable protagonist.

If you're a fan of edgy humor, and authors such as Ryan Hill and William Vitka, I think you'll enjoy this too.

Caves du Vatican
By Paul J. Schwartz
This is an absoltely brilliant short novel by one of France's great writers of the 20th century, and a Nobel Prize winner. Gide cleverly weaves the stories of the families of three sisters around the murder of one of the sisters' husbands, a modern day crusader seeking to liberate the kidnapped pope. The novel focuses on the "gratuitous" killer Lafcadio, who asserts his freedom through the crime but quickly finds himself bound by unforeseen contingencies.

A French mandarin
By F. O'Neill
French has always been my second language (I grew up in Geneva, though schooled in England). I know French literature well. I had never before read Andre Gide, a failure for which, being a novelist myself, I can give no reason whatsoever.

M. Gide's French gives me very great pleasure. It has the dry, supple feel of snakeskin, beautiful in its pauses and considerations, that the very best classical French does better than perhaps any other language (certainly any of the ones I know myself). It would be stately, if it were not quite often sly.

And sly for reason. This is a decidedly odd book. Satire? No, too much real and sympathetic feeling. Detective story? No, though sometimes in form. Mystery? Too ridiculous. Existentialism? Maybe, the trouble being that in seventy years of literary life I have never discovered what existentialism means. There is certainly a serious and dreadful existential act, I suppose, followed by what would seem to be social satire, or maybe it is more existentialism. Is it even a spiritual testament? Could be, but that is such a rude suggestion in France

I do not mean to be dismissive. This is an impressive book, very well worth reading, moving easily between its moods, elegant in thought as well as language. M. Gide was a very great master. It is well to approach great masters with faith, until it is found misplaced. I am not at that place. I will approach more Gide, and with respect

Gide is great
By Andrea Gallardo
This is a wonderful book. It is an elegantly (though not pretentiously) written work whose story is driven not only by an interesting plot but also by very interesting and strange characters. This is one of my favorite books. A classic.

Jurisprudence: Theory and Context, Seventh Edition, by Brian Bix

Jurisprudence is aimed at students new to the study of legal philosophy, also offering new ideas and perspectives that will be of interest to established scholars. Bix seeks to explain the often complex and difficult ideas in Jurisprudence clearly, but in a way that avoids distortion of the ideas through over-simplification. As well as introducing the reader to the fundamental themes in legal philosophy, it also describes and comments critically on the writing of the foremost legal theorists.

Review
''To every topic Brian Bix brings a sharp and discerning intelligence, pointing out weakness as well as strengths in the various approaches. For an overview of jurisprudence that is insightful as well as clear, critical but also generous in its assessments, one can't do better than this book.'' --Robert W. Gordon, Stanford Law School (on the second edition)
