From Publishers Weekly
The 1954 discovery and subsequent autopsy of a 500-year-old mummified Inca boy, victim of human sacrifice, inspired this archeological, anthropological detective story by Omni and Discovery writer Tierney. His research into the origins of human sacrifice involve encounters among the Incas of the high Andes where priests and witches still conduct sacrificial killings combining Christian and ancient pagan rites, both of which are usually accompanied by heavy consumption of alcohol. Described in detail are methods of victim selection, execution and reasons for these acts--which include deification of the victim, propitiation of gods and of natural forces. Tierney's analysis of the complex evolution of attitudes toward human sacrifice from the actual to the symbolic, e.g., from Crucifixion of Christ to Eucharist, is treated summarily as little more than an addendum to his firsthand accounts of his Andean adventures. Human Sacrifice is not what you think it is.......
By Jovita Bazan-Lopez
The Highest Altar by Patrick Tierney is an amazing first hand account of human sacrifice why it was and is still being done in South America, and around the world all ancient cultures have their stories of a spilling human blood payment to the gods, all wars can be called human sacrifice as well it is an offering to our bloody alien gods....who have done a great job of hiding their existence, but deep research will bring them to the forefront of your consciousness, but many will fight this awareness today in church the pastor talked about the jewish blood sacrifices to god, he described how the perfect unblemished animal was cut up, (in human sacrifice the most perfect beautiful children were sacrificed by the Ancients ), I was stunned its the exact way that human victims are cut up....the pastor said that the blood is the life force that god demands from us, I say not "God" but fallen angels/demons or extraterristial beings who feed off human beings energetically and physically because they have cut them selves off from the Eternal Source. Why don't people get it any bloody sacrifice needed by a god is not the true God.

The Highest Altar is the most important book I've read this year the way he writes its like you are there with him on the adventure of a lifetime, he is a very courageous man who has given me the information that I have been seeking for a lifetime as I am Aztec and was horrified at their sacrifices, and couldn't find any information that answered my question which was WHY hurt other human beings, through my research now I know that they the people who did and do this are terrified of the "gods" who have demanded blood sacrifice for thousands if not millions of years using the upheavels of Nature to get people to murder for the good of all.

Thought-provoking book on ancient and today's human sacrifice
By Tanner Griffins
This is one book that will hold you until the end. Whether you are fascinated with human sacrifice, with ancient cultures of South America, with mountain hiking or with little known clues to the Bible, you will find all of that in Patrick Tierney's book.

The author gives a good historical background on the ancient Inca custom of taking children or young adults to the top of high mountains to sacrifice them to the gods. He then visits places in Chile and Peru where shamans allegedly practice human sacrifices even to this day. Tirelessly going from one shaman to another, to victim's families, police and anthropologists, he is able to put the pieces of the puzzle together, in a part that reads like a detective story.

The last part deals with Western civilization's own involvement with human sacrifice in Judaism and Christianity. In fact, claims the author, most if not all religions hide the skeleton of human sacrifice in their closets. Human sacrifice used to be an important element of religious practice that was eliminated in reforms in Judaism only to be brought back to the forefront with the ultimate sacrifice of Christ. Although interesting, that part makes so many various interpretations, most often hastily that it is difficult to digest it all and to take seriously. I thought his interpretations and detective work in the first parts of the book made more sense because they were more carefully articulated.

It is an out-of-print book but, knowing that human sacrifice is still going on in South America now well into the 21st century (look at the news), I think it is an important read, especially since so many books on the ancient Incas are mostly mute with regards to the extent of human sacrifice. This is, all in all, a very thought-provoking book and worth to seek as a second-hand copy.

By Ryan
Should be titled, Gender Roles: A Feminist Perspective, because this work is heavily biased towards the feminist perspective--which is fine, although it would be more respectable to go ahead and place that on the title. For example, Lindsey's definition of sexism is "the belief that the status of female is inferior to the status of male." Clearly, then, sexism is either not possible against men or other sexes, or else this clearly points to the overall feminist regime running through the text. Such is either academic inadequacy or outright deception.

Very Unbalanced Perspective
By Kimberly L Shipley
I felt this text was very slanted and contained a heavy feminist bias to it. A feminist perspective isn't terrible in and of itself, but when the book complains about the male bias of other textbooks but then proceeds to do the opposite, it's just as bad. It just felt very unbalanced. It's perfect for a feminist perspective or feminism 101 class, but not for a class that is supposed to be talking about gender issues from both sides.

Sorry About That: The Language of Public Apology, by Edwin L. Battistella

People do bad things. They misspeak, mislead, and misbehave. They lie, cheat, steal, and kill. Often, afterward, they apologize. But what makes a successful apology? Why does Joe Biden's 2007 apology for referring to Barack Obama as "articulate and bright" succeed, whereas Mel Gibson's 2006 apology for his anti-Semitic tirade fails? Naturally, the effectiveness of an apology depends on the language used, as well as the conditions under which we offer our regrets.

In Sorry About That, linguist Edwin Battistella analyzes the public apologies of presidents, politicians, entertainers, and businessmen, situating the apology within American popular culture. Battistella offers the fascinating stories behind these apologies alongside his own analysis of the language used in each. He uses these examples to demonstrate the ways in which language creates sincere or insincere apologies, why we choose to apologize or don't, and how our efforts to say we are sorry succeed or fail.

Each chapter expands on a central concept or distinction that explains part of the apology process. Battistella covers over fifty memorable apologies from McDonald's, Martha Stewart, Oprah Winfrey, Jane Fonda, Bill Clinton, and many more. Moving back and forth between examples and concepts, Battistella connects actual apologies with the broader social, ethical, and linguistic principles behind them. Readers will come away from the book better consumers of apologies - and better apologizers as well.

Review

"Conditional apologies, vague apologies, apologies not accepted: Why is it so hard to say we're sorry and be done with it? With a clear eye and prose that never drags, Ed Battistella brilliantly illuminates the hidden dynamics of public apologies from the Oprah Winfrey Show to Mel Gibson's downfall and from Joe Biden's doubletalk to Woodrow Wilson's shoelace-chewing mea culpa. You won't be sorry you read this book." --David Skinner, author of The Story of Ain't: America, Its Language, and the Most Controversial Dictionary Ever Published

"Sorry About That is a bracing catalogue of human folly that stuck with me after I'd finished reading it. Battistella provides a panoramic view of shameful episodes and the subsequent apologies, confessions, and denials whose language he keenly dissects, in order to show all the ways that we have to genuinely apologize -- and to wiggle free. Observers of public language will love the book. (So too, alas, will serial offenders.)" --Michael Erard, author of Babel No More: The Search for the World's Most Extraordinary Language Learners

"Edwin Battistella's readable and incisive Sorry About That explains why some apologies succeed, or at least avoid exacerbating the original offense, but most of them fail." --Wall St. Journal

"By examining the grammatical and rhetorical structure of such apologies, Battistella shows that our anxieties and confusions about confession are rooted in a deeper ambiguity that defines the genre of apology more broadly: the tension between the culpable self and the apologetic self." --Christian Century

How to apologize
By Michael Niemann
If you've ever thought the way a public figure apologized for some transgression didn't sound very apologetic, this is the book for your. Mixing solid linguistic analysis with great story telling, Battistella tackles the meaning of an apology in our culture and the factors that influence when and why apologies work in the public domain. You'll learn that context and past actions play an important role in determining why some seemingly incomplete apologies work while others don't. You'll learn what weaselly language detracts from the goal of an apology. Finally. you'll read some great examples of apologies from US history.

Battistella writes smoothly and finds the right tone to bring academic analysis to a general audience. It's a well crafted book worthy of all the attention it is getting. And even though this book is about public apologies, it made me change my own way of apologizing. Here's the short of it: I name what I did, I acknowledge how it affected the other, I offer an apology.

Insights into making amends
By Josie A Wilson
"Sorry About That" offers terrific insight into the public world of mistakes, regret, and making amends. So often when there is conflict or errors that are hurtful, the injured party wants to and needs to be acknowledged and to receive an apology. But so often the apology is self-serving and wanting. This book helps us understand what it really takes to begin the process of making things right.

The examples offered are in the public domaine but the principles apply to our personal lives as well. While it is a linguistic approach to the subject, it is very readable and accessible to all.

Fascinating!

Edwin Battistella’s SORRY ABOUT THAT: THE LANGUAGE OF PUBLIC APOLOGY is one of those books that will likely always be relevant — after all, public figures always seem to be apologizing for something. And this is what’s fun and interesting about the book: Battistella takes a look at public apologies — from those of Mel Gibson to Hillary Clinton to McDonald’s to the U.S. Congress — and looks at the language of these apologies to show the depth of (or lack thereof) their sincerity.

As someone who loves language, I enjoyed the way Battistella deconstructed various forms of apology; as someone who is consistently fascinated by the appalling things people say, I enjoyed seeing their apologies analyzed; we can often tell on a basic level when an apology is insincere, and in his examples, Battistella shows us precisely why. As one example, of Mel Gibson’s apology for his anti-Semitic tirade after being arrested for driving under the influence, Battistella points out that Gibson “attributes his words and behavior to another self—one under the influence of alcohol. But his statement merely highlights the question of whether his inebriated beliefs are more deeply held than those of his sober persona. Gibson’s apology also fails by specifically apologizing only for his belligerence and for drunk driving, without naming his other offenses…”

While these anecdotes are compelling in themselves, the book goes into much more than the good and bad apologies of public figures; it looks at the process of apology, inherited guilt, and apology and gender, among many other issues. Battistella’s examples span from America’s first sex scandal (Alexander Hamilton in the 1790s) to the very famous Clinton-Lewinsky affair, and he looks at the nature of apology and self-reflection as far back as the fourth century. SORRY ABOUT THAT, taking a fascinating look at moments in human history through how we apologize, is great reading for historians, linguists, and anyone interested in celebrity and political culture.

From Publishers Weekly
Zen priest Hagen, author of Buddhism Plain and Simple and Buddhism Is Not What You Think, offers a brief and wonderfully accessible primer on meditation, which can be a surprisingly difficult practice for many beginners. He helpfully defines meditation via negativa: meditation is not a self-help program, a quick fix, a mind-training technique or a way to relax before jumping right back into the fray of our busy lives. It's a lifelong practice that can, and should, seep into every arena of the quotidian, so that when we're attentively folding laundry or taking out the trash, we're doing meditation. It involves teaching the mind just to be here, says Hagen. Three dozen microchapters are organized into sections on getting started, establishing a daily practice and doing meditation for the long run. While there are a few black-and-white illustrations to get readers to try seated meditation in different postures, Hagen emphasizes that it's also okay to sit in a chair (without slouching), stand, walk barefoot or even lie down. The key is to be constant, meditating at precisely the same time every day and allowing the mind to settle into the present. Meditation isn't something we apply to our life, Hagen insists. Rather, we take it up as our life. (Sept.)

nuts and bolts of meditation

"Meditation Now or Never" strips down the misconceptions of meditation and gets down to the "nuts and bolts" of the practice. A wonderful book that stesses what meditation is and not what it does. A must for anyone who wants to understand the here and now.

Biocentrism: How Life and Consciousness are the Keys to Understanding the True Nature of the Universe, by Robert Lanza, Bob Berman

Robert Lanza is one of the most respected scientists in the world—a US News & World Report cover story called him a “genius” and a “renegade thinker,” even likening him to Einstein. Lanza has teamed with Bob Berman, the most widely read astronomer in the world, to produce Biocentrism, a revolutionary new view of the universe.

Every now and then a simple yet radical idea shakes the very foundations of knowledge. The startling discovery that the world was not flat challenged and ultimately changed the way people perceived themselves and their relationship with the world. For most humans of the 15th century, the notion of Earth as ball of rock was nonsense. The whole of Western, natural philosophy is undergoing a sea change again, increasingly being forced upon us by the experimental findings of quantum theory, and at the same time, towards doubt and uncertainty in the physical explanations of the universe’s genesis and structure. Biocentrism completes this shift in worldview, turning the planet upside down again with the revolutionary view that life creates the universe instead of the other way around.

In this paradigm, life is not an accidental byproduct of the laws of physics. Biocentrism takes the reader on a seemingly improbable but ultimately inescapable journey through a foreign universe—our own—from the viewpoints of an acclaimed biologist and a leading astronomer. Switching perspective from physics to biology unlocks the cages in which Western science has unwittingly managed to confine itself. Biocentrism will shatter the reader’s ideas of life—time and space, and even death. At the same time it will release us from the dull worldview of life being merely the activity of an admixture of carbon and a few other elements; it suggests the exhilarating possibility that life is fundamentally immortal.

The 21st century is predicted to be the Century of Biology, a shift from the previous century dominated by physics. It seems fitting, then, to begin the century by turning the universe outside-in and unifying the foundations of science with a simple idea discovered by one of the leading life-scientists of our age. Biocentrism awakens in readers a new sense of possibility, and is full of so many shocking new perspectives that the reader will never see reality the same way again.

Review
“I found the attack on physics to be pretty compelling ... Lanza's theories [are] certainly worth debate.”
—Houston Chronicle's Eric Berger, SciGuy blog

“What makes this book both interesting and worth the effort of reading it; is the unique perspective Lanza brings to the subject matter as a physician. ... From the way [Lanza] chooses to present his arguments, it's clear he has a solid grasp of esoteric disciplines like quantum theory, special relativity and particle physics. And what makes his presentation more compelling than other efforts I've encountered is his ability and willingness to weave personal experience into the thoughts and ideas presented. His style is conversational and warm which tends to pull you along through the exposition gently. And his sense of wonder and befuddlement at shop worn enigmas like the double slit experiment, Bell's theorem, non-locality and Schrödinger's cat is as infectious as it is delightful ... I very much like what Lanza has to say in Biocentrism.”
—Midwest Book Review

Endorsements for Robert Lanza’s essay on which Biocentrism is based:
“For several days now I have read and reread your article and thought about it. Like ‘a brief history of time’ it is indeed stimulating and brings biology into the whole. Any short statement does not do justice to such a scholarly work. Almost every society of mankind has explained the mystery of our surroundings and being by invoking a god or group of gods. Scientists work to acquire objective answers from the infinity of space or the inner machinery of the atom. Lanza proposes a biocentrist theory which ascribes the answer to the observer rather than the observed. The work is a scholarly consideration of science and philosophy that brings biology into the central role in unifying the whole. The book will appeal to an audience of many different disciplines because it is a new way of looking at the old problem of our existence. Most importantly, it makes you think.”
—E. Donnall Thomas
Thomas was awarded the 1990 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine. He is Professor Emeritus at the University of Washington and Director Emeritus of the Clinical Research Division at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

“It is genuinely an exciting piece of work. I am very familiar with some of the things you say. The idea that consciousness creates reality has quantum support, as you suggest, and also coheres with some of the things biology and neuroscience are telling us about the structures of our being. To put what you are doing in a larger context, it exhibits a dramatic new Copernican reversal. Just as we now know that the sun doesn’t really move but we do (we are the active agents), so you are suggesting that we are the entities that give meaning to the particular configuration of all possible outcomes we call reality. I think this is a great project.”
—Ronald Green

“Robert Lanza, a world renowned scientist who has spanned many fields from drug delivery to stem cells to preventing animal extinction, and clearly one of the most brilliant minds of our times, has done it again. ‘A New Theory of the Universe’ takes into account all the knowledge we have gained over the last few centuries, and correlates them to our own beings, placing in perspective our biologic limitations that have impeded our understanding of greater truths surrounding our existence and the universe around us. This new theory is certain to revolutionize our concepts of the laws of nature for centuries to come.”
—Anthony Atala
Atala is an internationally recognized scientist, and the W.H. Boyce Professor, Chair, and Director of the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine.

“As an astrophysicist, I focus my attention on objects that are very large and very far away, ignoring the whole issue of consciousness as a critical part of the Universe. Reading Robert Lanza’s work is a wake-up call to all of us that even on the grandest scale we still depend on our minds to experience reality. Issues of “quantum weirdness” do have a place in the macroscopic world. Time and space do depend on perception. We can go about our daily lives and continue to study the physical Universe as if it exists as an objective reality (because the probabilities allow that degree of confidence), but we do so with a better awareness of an underlying biological component, thanks to Dr. Lanza. I cannot speak for NASA or other NASA scientists, but personally I look forward to hearing a more detailed explanation of this biocentric view of the Universe from Dr. Lanza.”
—David Thompson
Thompson is an astrophysicist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. His contributions include the building and flying of prototypes of EGRET, which was launched by the Space Shuttle Atlantis in 1991. He is currently with the Astroparticle Physics Laboratory, and has received both the Goddard Space Flight Center & NASA Group Exceptional Achievement Awards.

“Yes, it is appropriate to ask whether our perception of space and time is a consequence of our particular neurophysiology. Yes, it is appropriate to ask how it happened that the conditions worked out to be just right for life to appear somehow on earth and then to evolve from the archaea through the eukaryotes to us. ... I’ll bet the book gets a good audience. And I like to see books published that challenge my own ideas and thoughts in ways that make me think, but not ones that simply throw dogma at me. The essay is definitely of the former kind.”
—R. Stephen Berry
Berry is James Franck Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus, Department of Chemistry, University of Chicago. Professor Berry is a member (and recent Home Secretary) of the prestigious National Academy of Sciences. He was also former Vice President of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and MacArthur Prize “Genius” Fellow.

“Science has a token of freedom that motivates scientists to study all logical possibilities that may explain the world. Robert Lanza has come up with an innovative approach to investigate reality from the viewpoint of biology. His article demands an answer to the question of whether scientists have exhausted all possible tools for studying nature. Can science bring biology into grand unified theory? A solution is suggested that involves a new concept, biocentrism. Lanza goes beyond the individual human attribute calling for interconnectedness among all living creatures forming the fundamental basis for understanding reality. A book that expands upon this unique approach is warranted, not only to alert society, but to call on it to test this novel new hypothesis.”
—Gunther Kletetschka
Kletetschka is a geophysicist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. He is also a Research Professor of Physics at Catholic University of America and leading scientist working on the James Web Space Telescope.

“It’s a masterpiece—truly a magnificent essay. Bob Lanza is to be congratulated for a fresh and highly erudite look at the question of how perception and consciousness shape reality and common experience. His monograph combines a deep understanding and broad insight into 20th century physics and modern biological science; in so doing, he forces a reappraisal of this hoary epistemological dilemma. Not all will agree with the proposition he advances, but most will find his writing eminently readable and his arguments both convincing and challenging. Bravo.”

Compelling and Relevant Book
By Michael L. Gooch
This is a brave new book. For me, it exhibits the same courage as the 2006 The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief.

In the August '09 issue of Discover Magazine, Roger Penrose participated in an interview in which he states that physics has been looking in the wrong corners. He believes some of the newer theories may not be valid and calls for a new way of thinking. That's how I recall the article anyway.

The same week I read this magazine, Amazon delivers Biocentrism to my doorstep. While Lanza and Berman may not be kindred spirits with Penrose, they most certainly attend the same family reunion. That is, I believe Biocentrism addresses a large part of the problems espoused by Penrose.

This book sets forth a new look at the universe. Lanza and Berman contend that our current theories of the physical world simply don't work. Instead of placing life as an accidental by-product, the authors place life at the apex of universal existence and purpose. It is a very thrilling and disturbing read. And I also could use the adjectives, compelling and relevant as the arena of physics seems to be moving in a direction of silliness (multiverse, string theory, etc.) that can possibly never be proved.

While the proposals made in Biocentrism seem radical and counter-intuitive at first, a bit of reflection will soon make the images clearer and place us on the pathway to a better and more commonsensical mindset.

A HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT
By H. J. Spencer PhD, renegade-Physicist
This has been one of the most disappointing books I have read in a long time.

As a theoretical physicist, who has studied the core subjects of relativity and quantum theory for over 50 years, I am well aware of the conceptual problems of this central science. I am also increasingly impressed by the major successes of biology since 1945, so I am convinced that physics has had its day, while biology will be the central science for the forseeable future. It was from this perspective that I expected some impressive insights from a book with this ‘biological’ title that promised a major shift in worldview.
Although this book was written by a brilliant biologist, most of this book is a rehash of POPULAR modern physics and astronomy. The focus is on the conceptual challenges raised by quantum physics experiments, although neither author could have spent much time studying these esoteric activities while building strong reputations in their own extensive fields of expertise (cellular biology and astronomy).
Their approach is to re-establish medieval Catholic theology, wrapped in the vocabulary of modern science. They believe that returning to the 18th century ‘rationalist’ philosophy that: “reality is perception” – a view initiated by John Locke and made famous by Bishop Berkeley – will solve the deep problems of physics and cosmology. The authors here state boldly that: “without perception, there can be no reality” [p.16]. They even go so far as to suggest that the moon no longer exists when no one is looking at it – confusing knowledge of reality with reality itself. Indeed, a blind man will still die from walking off a high cliff that he did not see. A more useful definition is that reality is what still interacts with us, even when we do not believe in it. Claiming everything is in our heads is just a return to the old idea of solipsism. If animal senses were not well-tuned to reality, it is difficult to see that few would ever survive to propagate their kind for millennia. Fortunately, only one species ever fills its head with symbolic nonsense.

In contrast, materialist scientists believe that there are real objects ‘out there’ (beyond our own heads) that have existed long before humans and will still exist when humans have disappeared from the universe. The modern physics project (since 1900) has adopted the reductionist ‘substance’ approach; first identifying atoms (too small to see directly) and then even smaller components, such as electrons, protons and neutrons. This process has continued down to the mysterious quarks (never to be isolated) but, at least, mathematically considered to further consist themselves of magical “strings”. This approach has not helped us to understand the reverse process: how larger compositions occur (synthesis) because the classical force-field concept crashed on the reef of the infamous “three-body problem” that was first uncovered by Isaac Newton and continues to sink attempts to build quantum models of even two electron systems such as the helium atom. Incidentally, how quark theory, based on combinations of three, strongly interacting objects, overcomes this hurdle is never discussed.

The “solution” used throughout this book is to describe a major problem in physics and then declare that this is ‘solved’ by biocentrism WITHOUT providing any details beyond the declaration that this is a new “principle”. What I expected to see was some biological insight applied to each situation but all we get is some empty words – the worst approach of beginning philosophers. For example, most physicists would admit they have no explanation for the Origin of Life but simply claiming: “this is an intrinsic property of the universe” does NOT provide much help; this cannot be viewed as a scientific statement. Another complex problem, human consciousness, has also defied scientific analysis so far but this too is readily “solved” by claiming that the universe itself is conscious or ‘alive’ hence: “biocentric”. Even cosmological problems, like the Big Bang, are examined and found wanting, such as: “What happened before the Big Bang?” Of course, biocentrism offers no answers either to such (pseudo?) problems.

A major problem with much modern physics is that too many people, including the authors here, still try to view the world of electrons and light in terms of macro concepts, such as: billiard balls & light waves. Theorists mostly know these concepts do not apply, which is why they retreat into a purely mathematical approach. The major problem with quantum mechanics is that it was designed to be a theory OF measurement (not a theory of EXISTENCE), so it must eventually be perceived by humans, who review the equipment ‘outputs’ in the form of numbers, which are another human construct (contra Plato). These authors also bring an unusual use of language, calling space-time an ‘entity’, whereas it is more usefully used to refer to independent examples of existence. No mention is made of major philosophers, like Kant, who proposed that concepts like space and time were verbal primitives used by humans to organize their mental models. Wildly, they believe that quantum particles actually only exist as probability waves; no problem for biocentrism as these waves are only a mathematical (or mental) construct. Furthermore, the Copenhagen Interpretation of quantum mechanics “strongly supports biocentrism” [p.58] but no details are offered.

Psychological assumptions are slipped in throughout the book, such as: “Looking around, we see only our own mind”. I do not know about other readers but I have yet to SEE my own mind but I like to think that I sometimes ‘KNOW my own mind’. No discussion is ever raised herein that even electrons may have ‘far awareness’ across both distant space or time (‘advanced interactions’).

The religious motivation of these authors (Lanz readily admits to his catholic upbringing near Boston) only emerges in chapter 9, where they discuss the Anthropocentric models of the universe, concluding (again, without any evidence) that: “the universe is simply the complete spatio-temporal logic of the self”. Another religious obsession is the fear of death (chapter 19), where the authors admit that: “If I am only my body, then I must die (but) if I am my consciousness, then I cannot die for consciousness may be expressed in manifold fashion – ultimately unconfined.” Here, a primitive analogy of energy is misused (“Energy can never die”.) whereas in reality, energy and momentum are transferred between separate objects. This false idea of “energy-identity” is used to reassure Dr. Lanza that his recently dead sister “is going to look fabulous the next time I see her”. [p.193]

Ironically, the authors view the most valuable aspect of biocentrism as “helping us decide: what not to waste time with – such as trying to understand the universe as a whole” [p.162] when it would seem that most scientists have decided not to waste their time investigating biocentrism. Potential readers may take this review as a warning in this regard.

It can be seen that these authors (and perhaps most readers) would benefit from taking a course in the history of philosophy to clarify their thinking and understand that problems of existence (ontology) and human knowledge (epistemology) have a long history.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

The Republic has fallen.
Sith Lords rule the galaxy.
Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi has lost everything . . .
Everything but hope.

Tatooine—a harsh desert world where farmers toil in the heat of two suns while trying to protect themselves and their loved ones from the marauding Tusken Raiders. A backwater planet on the edge of civilized space. And an unlikely place to find a Jedi Master in hiding, or an orphaned infant boy on whose tiny shoulders rests the future of a galaxy.

Known to locals only as “Ben,” the bearded and robed offworlder is an enigmatic stranger who keeps to himself, shares nothing of his past, and goes to great pains to remain an outsider. But as tensions escalate between the farmers and a tribe of Sand People led by a ruthless war chief, Ben finds himself drawn into the fight, endangering the very mission that brought him to Tatooine.

Ben—Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi, hero of the Clone Wars, traitor to the Empire, and protector of the galaxy’s last hope—can no more turn his back on evil than he can reject his Jedi training. And when blood is unjustly spilled, innocent lives threatened, and a ruthless opponent unmasked, Ben has no choice but to call on the wisdom of the Jedi—and the formidable power of the Force—in his never-ending fight for justice.

From Booklist
This outstanding Star Wars novel arose from the author’s concept of a Star Wars comic series using the elements of a classic western. So we have a not-too-habitable frontier setting (Tatooine); a wealthy rancher with a hidden agenda (marrying a virtuous widow, among other things); the children of the widow and those of the rancher (mostly with more guts than sense); a bandit chieftain (Jabba the Hutt); marauding Indians (the Tuskan Raiders, very fully brought to life); the technology of farming in an environment that makes the Mojave Desert seem lush; and a host of life-forms ranging from krayt dragons to the pit-dwelling sarlaccs. Oh, and there is a drifter named Ben who wanders into town in the middle of all the conflicts and befriends the widow, though not as much as she would have liked. Deserves very high ranking among Star Wars fiction. --Roland Green

From the Author
Star Wars: Kenobi is a sweeping story that's part epic western, part high-stakes drama, part romance -- but it's all Star Wars, taking place in the early days of Obi-Wan's exile to Tatooine. The greatest hero in the galaxy faces his toughest challenge yet: He must stop being Obi-Wan -- and become Crazy Old Ben.

We've seen the Sith nursing their hatreds, patiently plotting their revenge; now we see a Jedi hero having to prepare for a long vigil, protecting the new hope of the galaxy. Tatooine is remote, which should suit the needs of an outsider wanting to remain anonymous. But it's also a close-knit community, and staying unnoticed isn't always easy when one has the public-spirited instincts of a Jedi!

A project I've been developing for years, Kenobi is in keeping with one of the themes I focused on in my Knights of the Old Republic, Knight Errant, and Lost Tribe of the Sith books: What does it mean to be a Jedi alone? Kenobi asks that question, and I'm excited that Random House has helped bring it to readers.

Beautiful. My new favorite SW book
By Trevor 1138
Let me begin this review by saying that I could not put this book down. Not because there was a galaxy-shaping event taking place, or a superweapon about to destroy a planet, but because i was so invested in the characters. Kenobi is easily the most human Star Wars book I have ever read, filled with characters that capture your affection instantly. The majority of the novel focuses on a relatively small squabble between a small town and the Tusken Raiders assaulting its people. However, by making his characters so real and so human John Jackson Miller makes you feel as if the universe itself hangs in the balance. It is this group of characters and their interactions with one another that shape the outlook and personality of a stranger in town known only as "Ben".

In my opinion, the book's greatest triumph is showing a softer side of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Because of the former Jedi Order's rules against showing emotion, we rarely see Kenobi's human side in Episodes I-III. In this novel, however, he is on his own and truly alone for the first time in his life, allowing him to consider new viewpoints and learn to know entirely new types of people. The reader is kept appraised of his internal struggle through brief meditations with his former Master Qui-Gon Jinn. As the book progresses, he learns more about himself, the galaxy, and where he fits in a changed universe.

Whether you are a diehard fan of Star Wars novels or someone who simply appreciates the movies, this book will take your breath away. In just under 400 pages, Miller takes readers on an emotional journey with new characters of his own creation and old favorites. Whether you are a newcomer to the galaxy or a longtime resident looking for a refreshing point of view, this book will not disappoint.

Star Wars meets Firefly
By Arnold
Ever wonder what would happen if George Lucas and Joss Whedon combined forces to make a Star Wars--Firefly crossover?

Apparently, John Jackson Miller (JJM) did because Star Wars: Kenobi is a bona fide Star Wars Western novel. Del Rey Publishing has been taking the Star Wars franchise into new genres in recent years, from horror (Red Harvest) to detective stories (Shadow Games). Kenobi is probably one of the better results of this effort. It certainly reads unlike any other Star Wars book in recent memory. So, does it live up to the hype? Will this transform our image of Obi-Wan Kenobi the way Plagueis transformed our image of Sidious? Find out:

SPOILER WARNING: Because this book will not be released until August 27, I have tried to avoid spoilers. But basic plot points will be mentioned.

THE GENRE

As I noted above, this is first and foremost a Star Wars Western. In fact, I'd say at times it's almost more Western, less Star Wars.

The book starts off slow as it introduces us to life on a Tatooine frontier town, a small area called the Oasis. We meet a cast of misfits, lowlifes, and castaways as they struggle with the chores of everyday life - minding the store, scrounging up enough money to make ends meet, and, of course, warding off Tusken Raiders. The characters seem like they could have come straight out of a Western novel, except that they have blasters instead of pistols and moisture vaporators instead of cattle.

John Jackson Miller also took the effort to adjust his writing style to match the setting. Especially in the earlier chapters, we see turns of phrases that echo the Westerns. When Annileen Calwell, the saloonkeeper character, sees her son with her neighbor's daughter, she thinks, "the boy had eyes for Orrin's daughter..." Of course, Annileen's nickname is "Annie," another Western trope. Orrin Gault, Annileen's neighbor, is the "big man" in town, organizing patrols against the Tuskens and being the center of attention.

I appreciate that this book is not for everybody. If you read Star Wars novels because you like giant space battles and lightsaber combat then Kenobi might not work for you. However, I personally loved the change of pace. By slowing down in the beginning and giving the setting a real Western vibe, JJM really brought Tatooine to life in a way I'd argue we haven't seen since Star Wars: A New Hope. The characters are grim, pathetic, mundane, flawed - and all the more realistic for it. It's easy to see these characters as real people in the Star Wars galaxy, often unaware of or unconcerned with broader political events.

KENOBI'S ROLE

Our protagonist, Obi-Wan Kenobi, only appears briefly in the prologue and then several chapters in. Even then, the story is mostly told through the point of view of the Oasis residents and a Tusken Raider. Kenobi himself is mostly seen through the eyes of others. Again, I think this was a brilliant choice on John Jackson Miller's part. He allows the rest of the characters to live and breathe before throwing in the main star.

As we know, at this point in the timeline Kenobi is trying desperately to avoid the Empire and to watch over Luke. Yet, Kenobi isn't just, or even primarily, about those efforts. Rather, Kenobi is about how Obi-Wan struggles copes with the loss of the Jedi community. We see Obi-Wan, a man who had many Jedi siblings and parents, grow - or regress - into Old Ben, an isolated hermit. Because JJM took the time to establish the Oasis as a real Tatooine frontier town, we come to see it as a real community, making it a great backdrop for Kenobi's internal struggle when he comes back into the story.

Of course, as is his wont, trouble seems to follow Kenobi. Kenobi doesn't seek to be hero, but his strangeness draws others to him. However, I was glad that for the most part JJM doesn't rely on the tired tropes of Stormtrooper raids and Jabba's goons. The crises the Kenobi faces are of a much smaller scale. Yet, they also dictate his relationship to the community ever so subtly. Can Ben participate in and learn from the members of Oasis? Will he become the town hero? Or is he doomed to being a hermit?

Many of the advertisements for the book hinted that Kenobi might get involved romantically with one of the natives. That's definitely in the book and I think JJM hit this subplot out of the park. JJM handles the romance subtly and without relying on tropes. It never feels like it trivializes Kenobi's character. Quite the contrary, everything we see is consistent with the character we see in A New Hope. I hesitate to say more for fear of spoiling it, except to say that I doubt the novel creates one of the more realistic unfulfilled romances in the Star Wars EU.

That said, I did think some of the scenes in which Kenobi tries to communicate with Qui-Gon Jinn's Force Ghost were a bit too on the nose. What the rest of the book had in subtlety these scenes spelled out. We see a bit too much inside Kenobi's head in my opinion. I do appreciate that JJM is careful to keep the mystery around Qui-Gon's Force Ghost; the relationship never deteriorates into a casual conversation (as many allege the scene with Ben's Force Ghost in Return of the Jedi did), but rather stays on a mystical plane. I suspect these scenes were included partly to help remind some readers of the events of Revenge of the Sith and the other prequels, so perhaps they were necessary, but I suspect many fans who have already memorized the movies will breeze through them.

As mentioned above, one of the point of view characters is a Tusken Raider. These felt a bit flat to me. For much of the book, the Tuskens don't feel like compelling characters, but rather more like plot devices. We hear many of the Tusken leader's thoughts, but see little of their culture or beliefs. At times, they come across as generic warriors who are focused on conquests and raids. Nothing like the depth we got from Ralph McQuarrie and Kevin J. Anderson's The Illustrated Star Wars Universe. In short, I still feel like I understand what made the Tuskens, as characters or as a race, tick.

Fortunately, there is a payoff to the Tusken subplot. It also helps reveal something about Kenobi's character. By the end, I did appreciate that the character grew and learned from the experience. Again, JJM does a pretty good job to not trivialize or stereotype the Tuskens. There's nothing in this book that will make you view them as any less fearsome than when you first saw them in A New Hope. The growth that the character undergoes is entirely consistent with what would happen in a warrior tribe. So, at the least, the book certainly doesn't undermine the Tusken Raiders, but I just wish we'd gotten a bit more depth.

ENDING

While I promised I wouldn't reveal too many spoilers, my biggest problem with the book came with the ending. I will update this review later to discuss specific problems. Suffice it to say I thought events and character developments were wrapped up a bit too neatly. As Star Wars fans know, most EU books end with a "big battle" with a bunch of different groups and impossibly crazy coincidences. Unfortunately, Kenobi fell into this pattern, but this book more than any other really needed an ending that stood out. I felt like too much happened too quickly. It's not a bad ending, but I can't help but think the book deserved something truly memorable. That's all I'll say for now.

CONCLUSION

Despite my disappointment with the ending, I enjoyed Kenobi, but not for the reasons I thought I would. I'd advise readers not to start this book thinking you're going to learn every single detail and secret about Kenobi's life on Tatooine. You won't. Do pick it up if a) the idea of a Star Wars Western appeals to you, b) you enjoy strong character development, or c) you've always wondered what it felt like to live on Tatooine. Tatooine has always been one of my favorite planets and John Jackson Miller really makes you feel like you're there.

In terms of the writing, JJM is a great. His prose is probably one of my favorites amongst all Star Wars authors. What I really enjoyed in Kenobi is again the subtlety. He's willing to treat readers as intelligent and let them draw connections between the book and what happened in the films. We see incidents like Anakin's slaughter of the Tusken camp in Attack of the Clones obliquely mentioned, but JJM doesn't his us over the head with them. He's not like James Luceno, who litters his books with references to other EU material (although I did notice pretty conspicuous shout-outs to Zayne Carrick and Kerra Holt, two of Miller's characters from the Star Wars comics). As such, I feel pretty confident that Kenobi is one of the more accessible Star Wars books. You really don't need to know anything about Star Wars except what happens in the six feature films and possibly the Clone Wars.

Overall, easily 4.5 stars, possibly 4.75. Definitely the best Star Wars book I've read since Plagueis.

Perhaps the best Star Wars novel I've read!
By Benjamin Thomas
I've read about 15 Star Wars books, starting way back just after the first movie came out in 1977. More often than not, I've been disappointed and more than once, I've sworn off ever reading another. But this time I'm so very glad I decided to take a risk. How could I resist a story featuring such an iconic character?

As others have said, this is basically a western Star Wars novel. Everybody is well aware of Obi-Wan Kenobi's activities as a young man and as an old man, but until now we don't have much of a clue as to what he was all about during those hidden years on Tatooine. This novel begins just after Kenobi has delivered his "package" to the Lars homestead (i.e. the baby Luke Skywalker) and is now trying to settle into a quiet life on the desert planet and watch over and protect young Luke. Of course the quiet life proves not to be so quiet as he gets himself wrapped up in local happenings among the moisture farmers and their dealings with the Tusken Raiders/Sandpeople. Throw in a well-conceived protection racket plot and we have the makings of a fine story.

Much of the story is about the farmers themselves and how they interact. Ben (as Kenobi has decided to be called, of course) struggles to maintain his anonymity and hide his Jedi skills but sometimes circumstances make that very difficult, particularly when lives are at stake. But the novel is about more than that. Just as Ben struggles to forge his future as a hermit he must also determine the proper path for a Jedi in these circumstances. And what should his role be concerning the constant tension between the farmers and the Tuscans? I enjoyed getting to know the cast of characters and felt I had come to know them well and understand their plights. While there are some action scenes here, the bulk of the novel is not about action. And if you're looking for lots of Jedi action sequences, (and despite Ben's desire to hide that aspect of himself, there at least one here) best look elsewhere.

A slight digression from the novel itself: I've always thought that authors who set out to write a Star Wars novel are just plain asking for trouble. The Star Wars audience really falls into two camps: those that are complete fanboys/girls that know just about every detail about the entire Star Wars expanded universe, and those that are truly casual fans that would certainly know major characters like Luke, Han Solo, Anakin, etc. but would not know a Bothan from a Ssi-Ruu. Not too many readers in between. So to which audience does a Star Wars novelist target his novel?

Happily, the author of this book strikes a nice balance. There are not too many weird species here, and those that are present are well described so you can understand. At the same time, the story is not dumbed down in any way. Most of the farmers are humans and so the story thankfully becomes about the story itself and not so much about trying to decipher what's happening and who is doing what to whom.

The bulk of this story takes place over just a few days, and the entire thing occurs in less than a month. So there is plenty of room for more Ben Kenobi books should that be the plan. I, for one, hope there are more to come, as this one was a delightful surprise.
