Practical learning tool

Music Minus One works great for intonation practice and seriously increases the fun of practicing these etudes. There are two peculiar things though. The recordings are tuned at concert A 338 hertz which in our age is a strange choice to say the least, but might have been done for authenticity's sake. The second peculiarity is that the demo-versions of the pieces performed with bass and piano are generally slower than the recordings with just piano accompaniment.

For this reason it almost seems mandatory to have a programm that can slow down the music. I personally ripped the CD's and slow the music down with Transcribe! 8.0 for practice purposes. This way I can also loop a section that I want to practice more thoroughly. The accompaniment is set at the tempo's described above the etudes though. O, yes there are a few printmistakes in the notes which is a drag, but they don't seem to appear on the recording.

Well, apart from that it's a great practice-tool and the etudes are great for every beginning bassist, but also for say more advanced jazz-players that want to improve intonation and bowing-technique.

The Simandl Etudes are famous. This collection makes it better because it contains CDs with performances of the pieces by a good bass player and then CDs with just the piano accompaniment which are valuable for working on intonation, not to mention tempo and rhythm.

Excellent quality transcriptions and high quality recordings make this an impressive addition to a double bass library. These are great warmup pieces and also help to keep your chops in shape.

About the Author
Negin Farsad is an American comedian, actor, writer, and filmmaker of Iranian descent based in New York City. Like most comedians, she has a master's degree in African-American studies. She was named one of the 53 Funniest Women by the Huffington Post, one of 10 Feminist Comedians to Watch by Paper magazine, and was selected as a TEDFellow for her work in social justice comedy. She has written for/appeared on Comedy Central, MTV, PBS, IFC, Nickelodeon, and others. She is director/producer of the feature films Nerdcore Rising starring Weird Al Yankovic and The Muslims Are Coming! starring Jon Stewart, David Cross, and Lewis Black (both available on Netflix). Her next film, 3rd Street Blackout, starring Janeane Garofalo and Ed Weeks, will be released in 2016.

Crossing the Cultural Divide

A humorous yet poignant account of growing up Iranian American in a White majority culture and trying to find her place in it. The author even identifies with African Americans since they are a minority group set apart from White privilege. Humor turns out to be a good coping mechanism in navigating these cultural waters and she is like an Ambassador for crossing the cultural divide and understanding and accepting our differences. As maya Angelou said, "We are more alike, my friends, than unalike!"

His work is both scholarly and practical, and carries a confidence that is yet merged with humility and a sense of wonder, depth and awe. Unlike the vast majority of contemporary Freemasons, he is aware of the esoteric sources of Masonic symbols and allegory, and presents them in a way that is cogent and to the point. He does not make extravagant claims, nor does he limit himself to "facts" that can be "proven" according to the overly conservative view of contemporary Freemasonry. His feet are solidly planted on the earth, but his head and heart soar. This book is to be most highly recommended to any, Mason or non-Mason, who would plumb the depth of the philosophical, mystical and magickal underpinnings of the Craft.

Freemasonry - A Current Perspective

The Freemasons are the largest fraternal organization in the world, and one of the most well known mystery societies. Author Mark Stavish is an active Freemason, a Thirty-Second degree member of the Scottish Rite, a member of the Knights Templar and the Order of the Eastern Star. Why is this important? Only someone on the inside, someone familiar with the workings of the Freemasons, could provide such cohesive insight into their history, their philosophy, and how their ideals interact with day-to-day life.

The depth of scholarship in this book is reflected, in part, in the acknowledgments section when Stavish speaks of the assistance given to him by Brother Charles S. Canning, Director of the Harry C. Trexler Masonic Library (Allentown, PA). Brother Canning not only performed research for this book, but he also reviewed the manuscript.

In his foreword, Brother Lon Milo DuQuette speaks of an informal gathering of Freemasons at an undisclosed location, in an incredibly beautiful Masonic Temple. Part of his reflection is on the building itself, and its incredible sense of geometry (something that Masonic Temples are known for). DuQuette indicates that Masonry is once again becoming a secret society, largely because of public concerns over its esoteric nature. He goes on to say that the only demographic group applying for Masonic membership in significant numbers is that of young men passionately interested in the esoteric mysteries of the Craft.

In his introduction, Stavish notes that the symbols used by Freemasonry have their roots in both Jewish and Christian religious and mystical practices, with the fundamental notion of Freemasonry being that of build or creating. Masonry has a great deal to do with how a man lives his life - with the virtues of faith, hope and charity, as well as the Golden Rule being implicit in all Masons. Stavish states that by the example of improving himself, a Mason improves the world around him. A Mason will also be religiously devoted/mystically inclined. Within himself, each Mason constructs the Temple of Wisdom. The mystical nature of a Mason comes last, according to Stavish, because it is most personal.

In the beginning of this book is a short chapter on how to use it. This impressed me, because it placed the reader on notice that this was not just a book to be read, information assimilated, and book set aside. The information presented here is a beginning, and there is a path to be followed. In "Freemasonry", Stavish presents the events that are behind the origin and growth of Freemasonry, why they are still important today, and how to live a "Masonic" life as a "creator, builder and friend of God and humanity", whether the reader wishes to wear a Masonic apron or not.

It is suggested that the reader have a notebook handy, along with colored pencils or pens. It is suggested that the reader go over the list of recommended books at the end of each chapter, and read one of them. Another suggestion is to pay attention to your dreams - Bravo Mr. Stavish - excellent suggestion! Another suggestion that I heartily concur with is starting each reading session with a prayer.

Covered in this book are the different types of Freemasonry, he history behind the Temple of Solomon, Masonic initiation, sacred geometry, the Masonic Quest, Scottish Rite, Occult Masonry, the York Rite and the Knights Templar, and Freemasonry and the European Occult Revival. Each chapter ends with a listing of Key Points, Assignments - actions that the reader can take, and a suggested reading list.

The appendices include "Sacred Geometry and the Masonic Tradition", by John Michael Greer, Symbols of the Tracing Boards and the Degrees, and Excerpts From "Morals and Dogma" on the Three Degrees of Masonry.

For anyone interested in knowing more about Freemasonry, or perhaps in joining the society, this book is an excellent first step on the path of wisdom.

Great starting point for Master Masons...

Mark Stavish has written a wonderful book for newly raised Master Masons - I think it would be a great gift for a lodge to give a candidate at his raising. "Freemasonry" clearly outlines many of the philosophical and occult concepts behind aspects of Masonry from Blue lodge and its craft degrees to the other appendant bodies such as the Scottish Rite and York Rite. I personally really enjoyed the chapters that looked at occult masonry and the occult revival from a historical perspective.

That being said, I was a little disappointed overall. This book is a powerhouse of solid information and I wish someone would have suggested I read it 2 years ago when I was made a Mason - however, I bought this book expecting it to delve deeper for the more advanced Masonic reader and from that perspective it simply didn't produce.

So to sum it up - great first Masonic book but nothing new for the learned Brother. Congratulations to Bro. Stavish for writing a fabulous introduction to the Craft.

The Best Sherpa for a Poetic Everest

When I was in college there was one guide for the Cantos, which was then viewed as the most challenging book of poetry in existence--that guide was called the Annotated Index and read like a collection of 3X5 cards produced by an army of grad students who pulled them together in a year bondage.(A false impression since two scholars researched it the old hard way--in the stacks and without access to a computer.)

This guide is much better.

I'd like to pay this book the highest and most sincere compliment I can by saying the Guide is as good as The Skeleton Key to Finnegan's Wake--which gave me the best help I found in cracking the nut of what was viewed as the other most challenging novel at that time.

By the way, if you'd like to see how one of America's greatest writers could also be vile, read any biography of Pound.

Very useful for shorthand reference and getting a hold of the Cantos

In comparison with Carrol Terrell's similar volume, this book is much more accessible and less intensely encyclopedic, which will be more or less useful for you depending on your intention. It offers some more intelligible general comments for each Canto, which are very helpful for understanding the basic forces at play in each individual Canto. Whereas Terrell's is more of a massive set of glosses, this volume is not as exhaustive in its explanations of less important allusions, but offers pertinent explanations for what is significant, sometimes giving information that Terrell's edition doesn't mention (such as Sordello, from Canto II, also being a significant presence in Dante's Purgatorio). On a side note, this edition does not cover--nor do other guide--Pound's own republishing and translation of Canto 72-73, though Cookson covers these Cantos as translated by an interlocutor, and a guide to these Cantos in any form is very hard to come by.

Overall Cookson's guide is superior to most other guides in terms of establishing an intelligible and accessible elucidation of the Cantos, and is very useful to break into, make your way through, and comprehend the overall forces of, The Cantos.

An excellent introductory guide.

The highly allusive nature of Pound's 'Cantos' makes them, as everyone knows, difficult to understand. Only when extensively annotated do they become comprehensible, and we are still waiting for the variorum edition that would provide us with an ideal text of the 'Cantos,' a fully annotated text that would clarify every allusion and obscurity, and that would provide sources and translations for Pound's numerous foreign quotations. In the meantime one is extremely grateful for books such as the present excellent introductory guide.

Basically the book consists of useful and occasionally extensive commentaries to each block of cantos, with briefer commentaries to individual cantos, followed by glosses to lines which require explication or are likely to cause puzzlement. Cookson's aim has been to provide the _minimum_ help a new reader requires.

The glosses are helpful and very well done, and Cookson's book will be found indispensable by new readers who are looking for a less intensive treatment than that found in the similar but much fuller guide by Terrell, details of which are as follows:

Although Cookson borrowed many of his annotations from Terrell, and admits that his book is not so comprehensive, his guide does contain much useful material that will not be found in Terrell, and his canto-by-canto commentaries provide just what the new reader needs. Strongly recommended.

Es un libro muy informativo, me interesó el capitulo donde hablan especificamente del pueblo de donde viene la familia de mi esposo, ya que ellos mismos tienen miedo de contarme mucho de la violencia que pasa por alli, este libro me abrió los ojos a muchas cosas que jamas hubiera imaginado que pasaron alli. Es una tristeza que esten pasando estas cosas horribles en un pais tan bello y maravilloso como México, y que la gente viva dia en dia con miedo por lo que han visto y lo que han escuchado, narcos que se aprovechan de jovenes de origines humildes y pobres, con promesas de que saldrán adelante los agarran de muy temprana edad, envenenando a las nuevas generaciones de mexicanos. En un principio no entendía porque mis suegros no me contaban lo que pasaba en el pueblo, pero cuando leí este libro si que entendí.
