Not for the average DIYer/Prepper

I was excited to see this book originally when I bought it several years ago, but now that I'm seriously considering building a small generator (from a lawnmower engine), I'm not so sure I like this book.

The biggest issues are that for whatever reason, this guy is expecting you to fabricate your own metal parts from a foundry. This isn't realistic for most DIY type of people. We need something that is easily done and doesn't require any serious skill or equipment.

The book seems to go quite a bit into the mathematics of engineering a generator engine, and that's dandy (and way over my head), but I'd have preferred a simple tutorial of how to build a generator from a small lawnmower/ride-on mower/etc. Every day stuff, on the cheap. If the SHTF, can you build a generator out of readily available things? It would have also been nice to get into the DIY for how to add 120V, 230V, a water pump, a welder, etc. Serious welding and metalworking is all a bit beyond my skill level (I am only an amateur welder), but casting metal is just leagues above all that. I don't really see a point in suggesting those are fundamental to building generators.

The title of the book is "Generators and Inverters: Building small combined heat and power systems...." but the tiny portion that does cover inverters are entirely about how to choose one already on the market. It would have been nice to discuss how to build an inverter yourself.

If you want to actually do a project yourself, I would suggest finding and downloading as many videos on YouTube as possible.... You can make a generator and DC power source out of a lawnmower engine and a modified automobile alternator. A ride-on mower in the range of 12-16HP is far stronger than most small generators you can find on the market. There are ways to modify alternators so the voltage goes above 12-14V and can be adjusted by the RPMs of the engine. You can scrap transformers and other electronics parts out of microwave ovens, desktop computer power supplies, etc that can amplify the voltage as well and even make your own welder. Many brushed motors can actually run off DC power, so an inverter is entirely unnecessary (as long as the alternator is modified to run near 120V). You can save tons of money, make something from stuff already laying around, and come up with something that entirely suits your specific needs. It's the kind of thing we need to be capable of doing if we're to survive as a society. Just look it up on YouTube for all this, truly DIY advice there for people who want to get their hands dirty without needing an engineering degree. A good place to start (though a bit over my head, but perhaps within reach) is to search for "Alternator Welder Runs 120v Power Tools - How To" and "Homemade DC Arc Welder Build" by sunny5rising. There are tons of different people who do the coolest things with the simplest items.

This book, however, is way too specific, way too engineering-oriented, and totally not for the DIY/prepper type - not unless you like to cast your own metal parts and do all sorts of engineering math calculations all day.

The book starts out good with decent detail,but then it goes way too far in expecting you to home cast and machine different items. If I had electricity to run a lathe,I would be needing to make a home generator. As I said starts out good,but then the author seems to want to prove that he can do different things that have little to do with the stated purposes of the book. Slow shipment also- must have been out of stock.

Full of excellent ideas and information!

I was also living in Florida when the hurricanes came through and I was without power for 6 days. This book explains how to use any easily found 1.6L to 2.0L engine to create your own home power plant. As stated in a previous review, this book is part of an equally excellent series that I recommend you have in your library to effectively utilize it. Because of the ideas in this book I am now independent of the electric company as I power my own house! No more electric bills or power failures! I also highly recommend Alternative Energy Secrets by Mr. Chastain...full of wonderful knowledge and information.

Misleading - a waste of time and money

This ebook promises success in an at-home business typing. Unfortunately, the author directs readers to web sites that don't even exist (some are "domains for sale" while others are advertising mazes). And the advice is mostly generic.

I don't believe there is a significant market for home typists. Most ads for this work are just scams.

Yes, there is some typing work out there, but this book won't help you find it.

About the Author
Franklin Allen is the Nippon Life Professor of Finance at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Stewart C. Myers is the Gordon Y Billard Professor of Finance at MIT’s Sloan School of Management. He is past president of the American Finance Association and a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research. His research has focused on financing decisions, valuation methods, the cost of capital, and financial aspects of government regulation of business. Dr. Myers is a director of The Brattle Group, Inc., and is active as a financial consultant. He is also the author (with Professor Brealey) of this book’s sister text, Principles of Corporate Finance.

Richard A. Brealey is a Professor of Finance at the London Business School. He is the former president of the European Finance Association and a former director of the American Finance Association. He is a fellow of the British Academy and has served as a special adviser to the Governor of the Bank of England and as director of a number of financial institutions. Professor Brealey is also the author (with Professor Myers) of this book’s sister text, Principles of Corporate Finance.

The text in this book is 99% identical to its 10th edition. Buy 10th edition instead. Many errors in exercises of accompanying materials.

prerequisites

By reading some negative reviews of this book on "concise" format/edition I would have felt discouraged to get it. At the same time I do understand that some of the readers could have no choice due to requirement of some classes.
I have so far read the first 2 chapters from the Kindle sample and I will shortly buy the full book.
I'd like to talk to the potential readers that are looking at this book not because they are forced to get it but because they are genuinely interested in it. I believe the authors are implying that the reader has knowledge of accounting. On the first or second chapter they mention "balance sheet" and I could follow easily because I did study programming for accounting at high school. Chapter 7 is about risk and it introduces variance and standard deviation: here as well my background should help since I have studied statistics at the university.
I would say that depending on educational background this book will end up being easier or harder to the reader. I'd say that a good background in math could help a lot even without previous knowledge of accounting or statistics. Either way, I repeat, you would need to know a bit of accounting (balance sheets, profit and loss, etc.). This can be achieved with simple searches on the internet: for example wiki on terms such as Financial_accounting and Double-entry_accounting_system.
Finally here some specific comments about the Kindle edition vs a regular paper edition. At first I found reading experience a bit awkward since I was accustomed to regular "entertainment" books with simple/plain layout. The original layout of this book is quite rich with charts, graphs. etc. and eventually I came to realize that overall the transposition from paper to electronic was well done. It could and it will improve with future editions however it is not something for which I would remove one star from the overall rate.
I found my good way to read it on my 7" device but I believe a 10" will offer a better experience.
I think I will go for the regular/full instead of "concise" edition since I understand there should be up updated coverage about risk with government bonds, specifically by reporting the recent example of Greece.

Leaves you scratching your head

This textbook was required for one of my MBA courses in Financial Management. It seems to speak at an intermediate level, assuming that the reader already understands a great deal about finance (which I do not). It does not break down HOW to get from point A to point C or D. In fact, it barely explains how to get from point A to point B. Throughout the text, there are significant areas where the reader is left to figure out on their own how to solve a problem. I conferred with my other classmates to find out if I was missing something. It seems that this text is meant for the more advanced finance student. Good luck!

Disappointing

This book is of value to a newly certified diver or someone interested in becoming certified. As an experienced diver I had great expectations in view of the title of the book, the book description, and the credentials of the author, but I must say having finished the book that I learned very little. A good part of the book is spent on the history of our understanding of decompression sickness and on the different theories of DCS.

Beyond that there is a paucity of practical information on top of what most divers already know. Some statements in the book such as, "systems such as Spare Air are adequate (as backup) for most recreational diving applications", are just dangerously wrong. On top of that the Kindle edition at $29.95 is much overpriced compared to other Kindle books of similar genre.

Important resource for all divers

I too have been following Alex's columns in Dive Training magazine, and couldn't wait to get the complete book. All divers, regardless of experience, will benefit from reading this book because of the wealth of updated information Alex provides on all aspects of our sport. It will give you a better understanding into the art and science of diving, and how to explain it to non-divers and new students alike. And perhaps most importantly, it provides the information necessary to safely return from each trip underwater as well as protect our threatened marine environment. Very detailed and referenced, easily understood, and yes, even thought-provoking in several areas. You will learn something new, and it's guaranteed to spark conversations at your dive club meetings and at your pre-dive planning sessions. A must read!

May be good on the Kindle but the conversion to PC and iPad sucks

I have been looking forward to the book for months. I am sure the hard back version is great. I cannot speak for the Kindle version. All I know is that the PC and IPad version using the Kendle reader versions for iPad and PC is terrible. There size, color, and type of font changes unexpectantly at time as well as other problems. Not necessarily and enjoyable read. Amazon was really good about refunding my money when I complained. I do plan on buying the hard copy because I know how much excellent information is within. The author is probably the best authority on scuba diving around today and I just hope the Kindle version is readable. I hope he puts out an iPad version soon.

Not terrible, but not Island of the Blue Dolphins

Sequels are almost always a let-down. I loved IotBD in grade school, and was thrilled to discover the sequel -- twenty-five years later, while in the library with kids of my own. I took it home and devoured it, but was left dissatisfied.

Not only does Zia's story pale in comparison to Karana's heroic survival, but several moments left me frowning with annoyance.

First of all, the plot inconsistencies drove me mad. Midway through the book, we are given to believe that all the young people at the mission have run away, leaving only Karana and some old Indians behind. (This is crucial to the plot, as she alone is blamed by the cruel captain as a suspected accomplice of the runaways.) But then we learn, out of the blue, that her brother has also remained behind -- but we're never told why. Later, when Karana comes to the mission and is given a bed in the girls' sleeping quarters, I thought this room would now be desolate -- but O'Dell tells us it's still crowded. With whom?

Sadly too, the character of Karana takes a beating in this book. In IotBD, she was a hero, larger than life. But seen through Zia's eyes, she is a mute and pitiable recluse lost in a foreign world, who takes childish delight in melons. This might be realistic, but it's a pathetic turn of events that I would rather not have read.

There is also a tragic irony that runs through the plot, to wit: Karana left her island to seek companionship at long last. But in the sequel, we learn that she ends up withdrawing to an isolated cave where she recreates a tinier, sadder version of her free life on the island, before finally dying of a broken heart. Zia, meanwhile, originally left her home village for the regimented life of the Mission solely in the hope of finding Karana -- but in the end, what she learns from Karana is that she'd be better off back home.

In other words, both characters would have been better off if Zia had never heard of Karana and Karana had died on her island. And I think I would have been better off had I not stumbled across this book.

Whatever Happened to Karana?

Zia is the continuation of the Island of the Blue Dolphins, or what happened to Karana after she left the island.

Zia is a young girl whose mother was the sister of Karana. Zia had learned of Karana before her mother passed away and now Zia wants to rescue Karana from the island. That she tries with her brother, Mundo with a small boat they found washed up. They get caught by whalers and escape.

During this time, the Indians live at the Mission where they have to work hard just to be able to eat and sleep, and also learn the religion of the priests there. There is a lot of unrest and many run away.

Finally when Karana makes it back to the mainland, she cannot get used to the way people live--she has always lived her way with her dog and no one understands that. What was suppose to be a happy reunion between Zia and Karana ends up a sad tale. In the end, Zia finally figures out what life could be like and leaves.

The story is written well and there is truth in it just as there was in the Island of the Blue Dolphins. The tale does drag in places and in others, there is lots of action. But you do learn how the Indians were treated by the Mission people and why they ran. So there is some teaching here.

This book is the sequel to Island of the Blue Dolphins. Zia, the nice of Karana, wants to find her aunt. She tries many possible ways to get to the island that her aunt is supposable on. Many other people came in to help her. Do you think they will ever find Karana?
Zia and, her brother, Mando are the main characters. Mando would be tribally annoying at times. For example, he had to go just about everywhere with Zia. It seemed as if he would never go away. Also, if you did not let him do what he wanted he would cry or make Zia feel like she has to go out of her way to make him happy. Threw out the book you would find Spanish words like; Mira, they would not tell you most of the meanings. That is what I did not like about the book. Mostly the book made it up with action that was taking place. The exciding parts don't last very long in the book. I think they should be longer. Most of the boring parts where long. There were some not very important things in the book but it as still good to read.
I would recommend this book to people who have already read Island of the Blue Dolphins. Also, I recommend this to people who like a great adventure. It is easy to read, but the Spanish words would be hard for people who don't know Spanish.

comprehensive treatment and historical perspective

If you are looking for the fastest way to learn and use special relativity (this is not about general relativity as the previous reviewer says), this is not the best book to use.
After an introductory chapter 1, which quickly previews much of the later material, French systematically analyzes the many observations and contradictions (the Michelson-Morley experiment just one of them), astronomical and laboratory, about the behavior of light that fitted neither an ether-wave model or a particle model. We are thus lead to a deeper appreciation for Einstein's insight and genius in his creation of the special theory of relativity; it was much more than just an extension of the Lorentz-transformations.
French is a master at his subject, and his systematic elucidation will reward the reader with a deep understanding. His problems are very well designed, and he provides answers which is always very helpful in learning.
If you have some time, and would like also to gain historical perspective about what it was like to struggle for a consistent theory in a mass of contradictory observations from the world view of Newtonian mechanics, I highly recommend this book.

The only book you need to learn special relativity

"Special relativity" is discussed in many classical mechanics, electromagnetism and quantum / modern physics textbooks. You may learn different aspects of this subject from these books.

This book is specifically designed and written for those who want to learn special relativity comprehensively from one single source.

The book starts with the basics of the theories behind special relativity with simple arguments and plain language. In the first 5 chapters, you learn the mechanical fundamentals of special relativity. The examples and end-of-chapter problems are very useful and instructive. Furthermore, the answers to all problems are given in back of the book as well, which enables you to check your answers. Starting from chapter 6, more advanced topics are introduced, like momentum, energy, basic electromagnetism and so forth. Again, the problems should be solved by students in order to gain a thorough comprehension of the subject matter. The diagrams and pictures in the book are also very helpful to understand the concepts.

The bibliography at the end of the book can be used to consult for further discussions, because special relativity has many applications in various areas of physics.

To sum up, this book, all by itself, can be used to learn and understand special relativity very well in a short period of time, because it is concise, simple, effective, pedagogically well-prepared and very suitable for self-study. You do not need any other fancy, expensive book. A.P. French does an excellent job in laying out the principles of special relativity with illustrative examples and problems. It deserves every penny you paid.

Yep, it's a relativity textbook

This book is exactly what you think. It's a textbook about special relativity written in 1968 - fortunately exactly nothing of value has changed in the field since then (inb4 angsty relativity specialists disagreeing with me - the math is the math is the math). I highly doubt anyone is buying this for any reason other than for a physics class, but on the off chance that someone is, here's some actual thoughts: it seems to be relatively well written and straightforward (if you can ever say relativity is straightforward). A bit dry, but it is a textbook. My copy is more than a bit faded since, well, it's from 1968, but it's still in good enough shape. I guess I would recommend it if you want to read a special relativity textbook for fun?

Do the United States and France, both post-industrial democracies, differ in their views and laws concerning discrimination? Marie Mercat-Bruns, a Franco-American scholar, examines the differences in how the two countries approach discrimination. Bringing together prominent legal scholars—including Robert Post, Linda Krieger, Martha Minow, Reva Siegel, Susan Sturm, Richard Ford, and others—Mercat-Bruns demonstrates how the two nations have adopted divergent strategies. The United States continues, with mixed success at “colorblind” policies, to deal with issues of diversity in university enrollment, class action sex-discrimination lawsuits, and rampant police violence against African American men and women. In France, the country has banned the full-face veil while making efforts to present itself as a secular republic. Young men and women whose parents and grandparents came from sub-Sahara and North Africa are stuck coping with a society that fails to take into account the barriers to employment and education they face.

Discrimination at Work provides an incisive comparative analysis of how the nature of discrimination in both countries has changed, now often hidden, or steeped in deep unconscious bias. While it is rare for employers in both countries to openly discriminate, deep systemic discrimination exists, rooted in structural and environmental causes and the ways each state has dealt with difference in general. Invigorating and incisive, the book examines hot-button issues such as sexual harassment; race, religious and gender discrimination; and equality for LGBT individuals, thereby delivering comparisons meant to further social equality and fundamental human rights across borders.

She is a member of the Research Institute LISE CNRS (Codirector of the program Gender, Categories and Policy) and also of the scientific committee of PRESAGE (Sciences Po/OFCE Research and Academic Program on Gender Thinking).
