Top notch Sisters of Battle novel

One of the best Sisters of Battle pieces of fiction available on the market. They're actually written as competant militant force instead of the lambs at the slaughter they are usually set as. Characters are decently assembled and avoid the mary-sue sentence of many space marine characters. Quite a good read with a decent mix of intrigue and usual 40k action scenes.

Too Divine By Far...

In his third Black Library novel set in Games Workshop's Warhammer 40K universe, M. Swallow uses female heroines of the Adepta Sororitas: Sister Miriya, an elite Celestian Superior and Sister Verity, a non-militant Hospitalier. The story is a rather standard action plot, with no additional personal journeys or significant character development to get in the way.

The characters are two dimensional, and all but Miriya's motivations, which seem limited to the "faith and fire" of the title, seem inconsistent, particularly in Sister Verity. She alternates between capable and cowering, proficient and pacifist. The supporting cast is stereotypical: the stern but fair Canoness, aggressive Seraphim, and steadfast Sisters, reading like the entries of their Codex for the 40K wargame.

The villains are similarly single-minded and would be familiar to any fan of the older James Bond films. They monologue (to borrow the term from The Incredibles) and say things to the effect of, "Before I leave you here to die, let me explain my fiendish plan..."

The plot is fairly standard action adventure fair, linear with little in the way of additional twists or turns. The combat scenes read a little like a battle report from the tabletop game, which is interesting if you like a top-down viewpoint, but less so if you prefer your action more immediate and personal. There is little foreshadowing and plot devices sometimes literally fall from the sky. Our heroines emerge unscathed from clearly fatal situations, or vital pieces of their kit conveniently happen to be in the hands of the low-level thugs they just killed. If you like your protagonists to overcome climactic confrontations by divine intervention, in somewhat Homeric tradition, along the lines of "Our faith in the Emperor saved us," then you'll enjoy the finale. If you prefer characters that get by on their own strengths and skills, then perhaps you won't.

The plot would be more forgivable if M. Swallow accurately captured the feel the 40K universe. Unfortunately, his descriptions feel a bit to contemporary, such as specifically calling a meltagun a microwave, and the anachronistic language common to the setting is just a bit off, such as calling an auspex a "sense-taker." He also takes a liberty or two for the sake of the story, such as the somewhat unlikely situation that every psyker on the planet ended up a pyrokinetic.

Though I've been quite critical above, the book is not completely without merit, but those problems make suspension of disbelief virtually impossible for a significant length of time. In short: those 40K readers who aren't completists might want to let this "soon to be series" pass them by.

About the Author
Alan Merry is a practising cardiac anaesthetist, whose research focuses on safety, and in particular, on reducing error, in anaesthesia. He was the co-founder and co-chair of the New Zealand Medical Law Reform Group, which contributed to the passing of the Crimes Amendment Act 1997 which redefined the threshold for criminal prosecution arising from negligently caused harm in New Zealand. He is author of a number of papers in medical and legal journals. He has developed a computer-based systems approach to reducing drug administration in anaesthesia (the IDAS) which applies many of the principles discussed in this book, and which is in use in several Auckland hospitals.

This is an excellent book which gives a very good introduction to the field of peri-operative TEE. It is much better than the older version with new chapters on the upcoming field of 3-D ECHO. A must have for any one trying to master TEE in general.

Extremely difficult to follow without other resources.

For a text intent on explaining the principles and practices of echocardiography, the authors do a very poor job in conveying their obviously detailed knowledge to the reader. New concepts are rapidly introduced with either no explanation or no examples, relying on the reader to find other resources to provide a better grasp on the ideas. Whilst the depth is excellent, I was quite disappointed in the text and found others much more useful for concepts, relying only on this text for its greater depth.

I know this book is a classic but I found it to be rather difficult to follow...Perrino's book, although less detailed, explains things in a much easier format....The DVD, however, has excellent clips that help in the review process for the NBE exam...

THE LAW OF LOVE & Its Fabulous Frequency of Freedom

As I travel this world sharing of our research in the Divine Nutrition fields I continually find people who have the desire to be free. Some desire Freedom from the need to age or die, or Freedom from the need to create disease or even to eat or drink or sleep. Others desire Freedom to control the molecules of our bodies so that the universe supports us in a limitless river of synchronicity and joy and Grace. To witness these freedoms come into being, is often called a miracle.
I wrote in The Food of Gods that this type of Freedom is what I have come to call Level 3 in the Divine Nutrition Program, a level where we know how to release enough Love through our systems so that everything comes into a miraculous state of perfect balance and harmony.
The dance of Freedom is a complex one until we understand not just the science of the fields but also how the universe is preprogrammed to recognize and respond to us all. When we understand this, doors of limitless possibility reveal themselves to us and beckon us to enter and explore.
This journal thus becomes my journey through these doors, a journey to what the Buddha calls the Pure Land, to what others call Shamballa. Some people may feel inspired to join me on this journey for as you read through these pages something within you may respond in excitement, for perhaps this is part of your journey too. If that is so then please note that some aspects of this journey should not be attempted until you have understood and applied the principles and meditations in our other manuals*.
Some people may see this level of Freedom as a restrictive lifestyle choice, because there are certain lifestyle actions we need to implement and maintain in order to manifest these Freedoms; yet to others this level of Freedom opens within them hitherto unimagined doors that when accessed bring their own sublime rewards. I call these ones the seekers of miracles.
As this journey unfolded, I found myself downloading a constant stream of data from Universal Mind. Once I accepted the title of “The Law of Love” and the idea of Its freedoms, it was as if a gate opened and my dreams and meditations were suddenly flooded with data – data on destiny, data on how we can find it, embrace it, fulfill it or sideline ourselves, data and tools on how to achieve real freedom, data and visions on shape-shifting Shaman, data on how to create miracles and how to apply these to our world and even data on prophecy and the cross road of choice. I was also guided to summarize all of the freedom tools that we have provided in our various manuals at the Academy over the years and to offer these in Part 2, along with tools that were downloaded during a month long retreat that I attended with the Taoists in Thailand.
And so once again, this book, like all books that I download, has developed a life and a flavor unique unto itself. All I can do upon its release is trust that it will find its place of relevance within our constantly shape-shifting world.

About the Author
Sergio Scandizzo is the Head of Model Validation at the European Investment Bank (EIB) in Luxembourg. He is the author of Risk and Governance: A Framework for Banking Organisations; The Operational Risk Manager's Guide, now in its second edition, and of Validation and Use Test in AMA. He is Associate Editor of The Journal of Operational Risk and has published several journal papers on fuzzy logic, genetic algorithms and risk management.

Succinct. Kinda textbook-y, which in fact, I'm pretty sure it is. Pop references in the books will no doubt get stale with time, but the concepts are right on and an enjoyable read.

About the Author

Jia Yi Chow is currently the Assistant Dean (Degree Programme) at the Office of Teacher Education and a member of staff at the Physical Education and Sports Science Academic Group at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. His primary research area is in nonlinear pedagogy, which is underpinned by key theoretical perspectives from dynamical systems and ecological psychology. His other research interests include examining multi-articular coordination and visual search strategies captured within sports expertise. Jia Yi works closely with the Physical Education and Sports Teachers Academy (PESTA) at the Ministry of Education, Singapore, and also the Singapore Sports Institute.

Keith Davids is Professor of Motor Learning at the Centre for Sports Engineering Research, Sheffield Hallam University, UK. He currently holds the position of Finnish Distinguished Professor at the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences, University of Jyväskylä, Finland. He has held professorial positions in the UK, New Zealand, Australia and Finland. His research in ecological dynamics investigates constraints on emergent coordination tendencies in athletes and sports teams. These key ideas have been integrated into a nonlinear pedagogy, informed by his work on motor learning design in sport. He currently supervises doctoral students from the UK, France, Finland, Portugal, Australia and New Zealand. He has worked with elite sport development agencies including the New Zealand South Island Academy, the Queensland Academy of Sport, the Australian Institute of Sport, Diving Australia, Cricket Australia and the English Institute of Sport.

Chris Button works at the School of Physical Education, Sport and Exercise Sciences, University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. His research interests include fundamental movement skill development and water safety. Chris also coaches (football) and provides a skill-acquisition consultancy for a number of sports in New Zealand. Chris is an executive committee member of the Australasian Skill Acquisition Research Group (ASARG).

Ian Renshaw is based in the School of Exercise & Nutrition Sciences, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia. His research interests are in ecological dynamics and nonlinear pedagogy with particular emphasis on the development of sporting expertise. Ian is currently Head Coach of Toombul DCC in the Brisbane Grade Cricket competition. Ian is also an executive committee member of the Australasian Skill Acquisition Research Group (ASARG).

Loved the Second Half of the Book

I have read a number of blogs and articles about growth hacking over the past few years, all of which have a common theme. The blogs typically talk in circles, citing a few examples of companies that made it big, but never really explaining what the term means. As a reader you cannot help but feel stupid for not really understanding why it is such a big deal, but you are too ashamed to ever admit it. .

But I actually found the second half of the book to be very useful. There are two to three page detailed explanations of how companies like TechCruch, Quora, Zynga, Twitter, AirBnB, Groupon, Pinterest, LivingSocial, Instagram, DropBox, Hotmail, LinkedIn and YouTube used growth hacking strategies to win their markets. Many of these techniques will already be familiar to you, but I have not seen the stories collected in a single work. The authors do a great job of explaining not only the techniques used by various startups but also connecting the examples to the core principles of growth hacking.

I would recommend the book for marketers and product developers at companies both large and small, new and old. If you are short on time skip the first half and just read the examples.

Mixed thoughts.

I felt like this was written somewhere between a blog and an e-book. The nuggets of wisdom of the book were sporadically in-between what I felt was a lot of "filler" content. I wish the author would have shortened it to 25-40 pages of straight insight instead of explaining to the readers about what is Facebook, twitter, craigslist etc.... I hope the author writes another book more concise and straight forward.

This catalogue raisonne, updated from previous editions with 500 new images, comes a step closer to defining the prodigious pop artist's legacy in a medium he re-imagined for modern times, printmaking, and which was central to his life's work. Numerous of his most famous images can be found here, including the electric chair and Marilyn Monroe, along with reams of ephemera that bear testament to the artist's restless, experimental, rarely uninteresting energy. There are t-shirts and advertisements, commissioned portraits and shopping bags, generally rendered in Warhol's signature palette of hot, citrus-y colors. Images of gems, sunsets and historical figures refine our concept of not only the artist, but of the times in which he lived as well. With well-turned essays by Arthur Danto and Donna De Salvo, this document will be required reading for all Warhol scholars and fascinating material for anyone interested in the course of 20th century art.

No one can doubt that Andy Warhol has influenced the American art world both as an artist and as a personality. Feldman and Schellmann's catalog provides the specialist with a multitude of color images that do much to illuminate Warhol as a printmaker. Unfortunately, the reproductions take up less space than the blank areas surrounding them. These small reproductions are preceded by two brief essays that provide a less-than-adequate introduction to the prints. Geldzahler has only praise for Warhol and dutifully acclaims his ``contribution to art history.'' Roberta Bernstein's essay is more substantive; she is more analytical and willing to make critical judgments. Though useful as a catalog of Warhol's 364 prints, this book is not what it could be. A must-have for any Warhol fan.

Provides a visual history of Warhol's entire catalog, including Artist Proofs and other little-known printings. I originally bought this because I had recently purchased one of Warhol's prints and thought it would be cool to learn more about the history of it. After I received it though, I found myself poring through it time and again, reliving the genius of warhol over and over.

This documents practically every known work of Warhol's, from his early days sketching shoes to his later, more famous works of celebrities in the 80s. Some people will assuredly buy it for it's coffee table bling, but if you do so, please do yourself a favor and read through it ad really enjoy the works of one of the world's most prolific and revolutionary artists.

Andy Warhol Pop Art

As the Owner and Manager of Pop and Contemporary Fine Art in Singapore I can heartily recommend this book to any serious collector or fan. As a catalogue raisonne it is obviously full of details and pictures of Andy Warhol's work. This book also includes his biography which is written in a manner that is rich and inviting. Andy Warhol is considered one of the forefathers of the Pop Art Movement alongside Keith Haring and Roy Lichtenstein. It is interesting to see how his influence is carried on today through great artists such as Burton Morris.Pop!
