This classic collection of essays, first published in 1979, has had an enduring influence on philosophical work on the nature of law and its relation to morality. Raz begins by presenting an analysis of the concept of authority and what is involved in law's claim to moral authority. Raz examines whether the citizen is under a moral obligation to obey the law and whether there is a right to dissent. Two appendices, added for the revised edition, develop Raz's views on the nature of law, offering a further dialogue with the work of Hans Kelsen, and a reply to Robert Alexy's criticisms of legal positivism.

This revised edition makes accessible one of the classic works of modern legal philosophy, and represents an ideal companion to Raz's new collection, Between Authority and Interpretation.

About the Author
Joseph Raz has been teaching in Oxford since 1972. He has held a chair in the philosophy of law since 1985, and has been a Research Professor since 2006. He has also held a professorship at Columbia University since 2002. He is a fellow of the British Academy and a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Good book, wish there was even more

I bought this book for my son along with other sat prep books. For the price my son says that this is a good book and is written in a way that is easy to read. He read the entire book in one day. He says the content is very helpful and going through it myself I was able to follow along with my son's Ti-84 calculator. There are many practice questions but no practice tests in this book. For practice tests I recommend the official study guide from college board. Other than that this is a great book for the money. There isn't a huge amount of content, but for 150 pages the information is very tightly packed and useful. Check out my other reviews-Jwu.

Wow, Great even for Inequalities

The Author really knows these exams! He rightfully points out how tough inequalities are (p. 69), and gives some great examples on how to use the TI for them. They also are the heart of both of these exams, as well as most math competitions today.

This is one of those books on demand / create space deals, printed when you buy it, and has only 145 pages with quite large type. Every sentence is of value, and this will leave you wishing for more from this outstanding author. At this reasonable price, it's a must have along with the other test prep guides, and you'll really GET the calc side of the exams when you're done.

Great Book, Great Price

This is a very useful book for any student thinking about taking the SAT. It is very well organized and full of helpful examples and problem solving strategies. This book is great for students who might struggle with math and want some tricks to increase their performance, students who excel at math but would like to have some time saving methods of problem solving, or anyone in between. It isn't a comprehensive study book (only math focused) like some of the Princeton Review or Kaplan books, but unlike those books it provides more concrete problem solving strategies and tools to utilize the only resource (a calculator) that you are allowed on the test.

Practical learning tool

Music Minus One works great for intonation practice and seriously increases the fun of practicing these etudes. There are two peculiar things though. The recordings are tuned at concert A 338 hertz which in our age is a strange choice to say the least, but might have been done for authenticity's sake. The second peculiarity is that the demo-versions of the pieces performed with bass and piano are generally slower than the recordings with just piano accompaniment.

For this reason it almost seems mandatory to have a programm that can slow down the music. I personally ripped the CD's and slow the music down with Transcribe! 8.0 for practice purposes. This way I can also loop a section that I want to practice more thoroughly. The accompaniment is set at the tempo's described above the etudes though. O, yes there are a few printmistakes in the notes which is a drag, but they don't seem to appear on the recording.

Well, apart from that it's a great practice-tool and the etudes are great for every beginning bassist, but also for say more advanced jazz-players that want to improve intonation and bowing-technique.

The Simandl Etudes are famous. This collection makes it better because it contains CDs with performances of the pieces by a good bass player and then CDs with just the piano accompaniment which are valuable for working on intonation, not to mention tempo and rhythm.

Excellent quality transcriptions and high quality recordings make this an impressive addition to a double bass library. These are great warmup pieces and also help to keep your chops in shape.

About the Author
Negin Farsad is an American comedian, actor, writer, and filmmaker of Iranian descent based in New York City. Like most comedians, she has a master's degree in African-American studies. Crossing the Cultural Divide

A humorous yet poignant account of growing up Iranian American in a White majority culture and trying to find her place in it. The author even identifies with African Americans since they are a minority group set apart from White privilege. Humor turns out to be a good coping mechanism in navigating these cultural waters and she is like an Ambassador for crossing the cultural divide and understanding and accepting our differences.
