Discrete math for real software engineers

Software designs must address trade-offs among factors such as performance, usability, completeness, timeliness, correctness and so on. Judging from the number of bugs people encounter, software engineers seem to be trading away too much of the correctness factor for something else.
Hein's text addresses this issue by placing much greater emphasis on ideas from logic and methods of proof than most other books on discrete mathematics, such as the popular text by Rosen. In addition, Hein includes material relating important software concepts to abstract algebra, and he does this without slighting other common topics of discrete mathematics, such as sets, relations, functions, counting, automata, and computability. Software engineers who have learned from Hein's text will have practical tools that they can use to deal with the software correctness factor more effectively.
Besides all of these good qualities, the text is well organized, clearly written, and punctuated with deligtfully subtle humor. I plan to use it.

Deep, but overly dense

This book provides excellent coverage of logic and computability (I haven't really looked at the "Discrete Structures" component yet), but is often unnecessarily verbose in its explanations. It would work well in conjunction with a well-taught class, but not necessarily as good on its own.

Second Review of Dr. Hein's Book

Now, since I took two terms of classes that used Dr. Hein's book, I had internal urges to write emails to Dr. Hein and praise him for his book and his lab manual (but I never did wrote to him, though). Instead, I decided to write to a broader audience, here at Amazon. I found the book ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY, a Holistic Bible of Computer Logic so to speak, for every CS student. I have read and re-read the book and still reading it today, during the Summer Break. I scanned the whole book with a flatbed scanner because I needed to look things up often even as I studied other courses at Portland State University. I also highly recommend Dr. Hein's Prolog Lab Manual which guides you through the experiments designed to help understanding the Book's material. Marvelous Lab Manual, Dr. Hein! It is my opinion that Doctor Hein has a profound vision of where Computer Science is going and that's why he designed his Book and his lab manual this way. The Book and Lab Manual helped me tremendously to understand recursion and logic.
PS: I never write reviews of books, but this particular book have always prompted urges to praise it.

Having detail projects that are already well thought out means I can do more then one each nine weeks. Plus it makes it easier to find one that directly ties into the concept in which I am going over currently. Nice Job.

Good for class room projects

I am a 6th grade math teacher, and the students are really enjoying these activities. The first day I brought it to class, I gave the students a choice of 5 different projects to choose from. They chose designing a rocket out of geometric shapes and then converting the measurements to scale up to poster size. They worked in groups of three. As the groups finished, they asked if they could do another project. So far, it is great.

Necessary reading for anyone interested in Aesthetics - Art - Philosophy - Music. JERROLD LEVINSON is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Maryland and has written again a book that promises to become influential.
Perhaps best known for his work as a philosopher of music, Jerrold Levinson is one of the most influential writers in contemporary aesthetics. In this new collection of his essays, music remains a central concern. Four essays are devoted exclusively to, and two others deal extensively with, the philosophy of music. Two major essays (" Musical Expressiveness" and " Work and Oeuvre") have not previously appeared in print, others are revised from their earlier publication.
Levinson takes up issues in the philosophy of art in general as well as issues in particular arts. He focuses on interpretation, understanding, and appreciation of art. Among the topics he considers are the nature of aesthetic pleasure and the relation between pleasure and value in art, the nature of competence in music listening and the manner of its acquistion, the aesthetics of song and opera, and the difference between performers' and critics' interpretations of music.He also addresses the ontology of works of fine art, the role of the writer's intentions and public identity in the interpretation of literature, and the potential of artworks to embody and convey messages.
The author's previous book MUSIC, ART, AND METAPHYSICS was praised as follows by the BRITISH JOURNAL OF AESTHETICS and by MIND: " should be read by anyone with a serious interest in the philosophy of art", and " (this book has) contributed significantltly to the renaissance aesthetics has enjoyed over the last two decades.

Wonderful Books

We purchased all of the Studio Ghibili Picture books. Our 2 1/2 year old daughter absolutely loves them. The books are set up perfectly for little ones with lots of pictures, big words, and broken into chapters perfect for reading the book at bedtime over a week. She loves all of the stories and being able to follow along with the multiple pictures per page (somewhat like a comic book).

A great companion book to The Cat Returns film!

The Cat Returns Picture Book is based on the charming film of the same title. The underlying story is of a young girl's coming-of-age. This picture book is adapted from the original graphic novel by Aoi Hiragi. The film is directed by Ghibli animator Hiroyuki Morita (Hayao Miyazaki is also involved in it as the executive producer).

The story centers around Haru, a young teenager who feels like she is a misfit at her school, with only one really good friend. In the book, there is an introductory page before the actual story, where the main players/ characters are introduced. It is explained that Haru is a cheerful girl but lacks confidence, which might explain why she has such a hard time at school. The book also has a section (at the beginning) explaining the secrets of the Cat Kingdom, the cats who serve the king, cat favorites (food), and mysterious tools (The Warp Hole and The Cat's Eye).

Haru soon finds herself embroiled in some peculiar goings-on - she rescues a cat from being run over by a truck and to her amazement, the cat thanks her verbally! That same night, Haru is visited by the King of Cats and his entourage, and is informed that she will make a good daughter-in-law for his son, the Prince of Cats.

Reeling from this encounter, Haru discovers to her horror that the cats mean business when she arrives in school to find some bizarre 'gifts' - hundreds of wrapped presents containing live mice! Haru then hears a voice that asks her to find The Cat Bureau, and makes her way to a store (with the aid of an overlarge white cat named Muta) where she meets an elegant and charming cat named Baron von Gikkengen. The rest of the story focuses on the Baron's attempts to rescue Haru after she is kidnapped by the King of Cat's henchmen and kept prisoner in the Cat Kingdom.

I loved the underlying theme which addresses self-esteem and trying to find one's 'voice', universal themes which many adolescents struggle with. My seven-year-old daughter might not have appreciated nor understood this theme, but she loved the rich visuals. It is a story that can be appreciated by readers of all ages on different levels. "The Cat Returns" is charming with an engaging plot and interesting characters. The end of the book features lyrics to the theme song of The Cat Returns - Kaze ni Naru (Like the Breeze).

Photos and First Chapter Are 'One of A Kind'

Ryan Farr, a trained chef and professional butcher, scored big with his first book 'Whole Beast Butchery'. Book number two is this very interesting introduction to sausage making. I've been making sausages for--well, thirty years. I keep buying books on this subject. This is the 'book to buy' for first-time sausage makers. Why?: this is a 'hands on book.' The first section is what is 'definitive.' In text and about the best photos ever, Mr. Farr both shows and tells wannabe sausage makers every last basic technique we need to know: trimming, cutting into pieces for grinding, fat-to-meat ratios, the importance of emulsification, spicing and mixing and...well, whatever. He goes on to inform readers about cooking techniques and he concludes with a chapter on condiments and 'bread' items to go with good sausage.

I come from a time and a place where we could purchase excellent hot dogs in local supermarkets. They were so good that we could grill them and sell them as a fund-raiser for our 4-H club at our county fair! My grandfather sourced them for his 'mom and pop' restaurant. Here is a recipe for the hotdog of your dreams: snappy chew, all-beef stuffing, all natural casing. Ryan Farr doesn't stop with making the sausage: he goes on to stress the importance of proper cooking, tailored to the type of sausage you have made: poaching for delicate items like seafood sausage and boudins, grilling for 'gutsy' items and so on.

The big caveat: the first section is worth the whole price of the book. Farr incudes recipes but they are 'illustrative' of different types of the sausage maker's art. Rytek Kutas, while more 'commercial' in his focus, gives more recipes for more types of ground meat stuffed in casings. Farr's book includes terrines and 'pate en croute' (seasoned ground meat in a pastry case), a subject Rytek does not address. If you want more recipes, see the Marianski brothers' books, also available on Amazon. I own them as well and rate them highly. The Marianski books are more authoritative but Farr's first chapter tells a story, with those great photos by Ed Anderson, that earlier books do not provide. Speaking of the photos, this book is the only one I own that shows longitudinal cuts down the length of a cased sausage to show you the result of the recipe. Maybe you, like my wife, don't want to see any bits of fat in the product: just process the meat through a finer disc and you will have all the flavour and none of the 'flak' from picky eaters in your family. Real sausage lovers will appreciate the photos of what a well-made sausage can be and should look like! Good sausage doesn't need to be 'ground to death'...and Farr is not the only sausage maker to suggest, through his photos or in so many words, that it shouldn't be.

I am probably 'preaching to the choir' on this: if you are making sausage, you already know that you can find plenty of recipes and you can make really good sausages that will even have you giving up beef steak once in a while. A good meat meal does not need to cost top steak prices!

Okay: this is not the only book a sausage lover should buy to guide themselves to sausage heaven. It is the best existing book I have purchased to introduce meat lovers to the craft.
