Breaking out of the rut

This is a very good book for breaking out of the rut when you find yourself totally stuck for things to photograph. While some of the images remind one of those you might take in an introduction to photography class, that's not all bad. It gets your creative juices flowing again. Book helps you break repetitive image making and promotes creative thought processes, and it's not as dull as this sounds.

severely disappointed in lack of substance

Save your money.

This book is virtually content free.

96 pages and most of them are pictures.

Which IMHO any average snapshooter already can do.

And if you can't this isn't the book to start with.

This book is barely an outline of a few topics concerning how to see.

The only substance, and I speak loosely, was to break the rules.

Use different angles. Look at parts instead of the big picture.

I infer that if most of your pictures are colored blue that that must be good as the author had a lot of blue pictures.

A good book on composition, and admittedly those are very rare too, would tell you more about seeing. At least then you could look for elements to put together.

This book spent a lot of its few (about 48) pages of instrution doing a second rate job on composition versus actually seeing.

Read it at the library, as you will feel cheated if you spend $20-$25 for this to buy it.

Wabi Sabi for the artist and poet by ?? (Kamen??) would tell you more about seeing than this book.

There are a few good photog books out there. Feininger would blow this one away if you can still find copies.

This is just another one of the disappointments. And it wasnt even artsycraftsy just blah.

A Must if you really want to take great pictures

A friend of a friend asked me to "teach her photography". I asked her if she wanted me to teach her how to use her camera. She said yes, but she wants to learn to take photos that help her express her "artistic side". I told her that, that was difficult to teach but she can truly start the process by reading this book. It is a very straightforward book with lots of photos and explanations on how to help make truly mundane scenes, very interesting. I read it a long time ago and Kodak stopped printing it. I was so lucky to find 2-3 copies from a used book seller. Truly an awesome and inspiring book. If you ever see someone with a camera pointed toward something you don't understand, don't get or wonder "why the hell is he taking a photo of that", perhaps he/she sees something that you don't and is trying to capture it: they probably read this book and are taking great pictures. If you feel that the photos you post on FaceBook of your latest meal are mundane (seriously, no one really wants to see the sloppy mess you are about to masticate and then digest), then read this book and you will begin to notice things that you haven't before and take awesome photos. I wish Kodak could make an updated version of this

Yusuf Altintas is current NSERC Pratt and Whitney Canada Research Chair in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of British Columbia. He is also the Director of the Manufacturing Automation Laboratory at the University of British Columbia. He is a Fellow of CIRP (1997), ASME (1998), SME (2007), Canadian Academy of Engineers (2007), Pratt and Whitney Canada (2008), University of Tokyo (2010) and Royal Society of Canada (2010). He is the author of the first edition of Manufacturing Automation: Metal Cutting Mechanics, Machine Tool Vibrations, and CNC Design (2000).

An essential aid for the serious production engineer

Due to my job I am forced to read a lot of technical literature. I never got as much technical up-to-date information explained in such an intelligible way. Compared to other books dealing with manufacturing processes (which are mostly written by scientists in a very, very scientific way), in this book you've got the impression that the author virtually tells you the modern fundamentals of manufacturing. This makes this book easily understandable. Nowadays, High Speed Machining is well established in manufacturing. The future will bring High Performance Machining which means that the metal removal rates are significantly higher at high cutting speeds. As far as High Performance Cutting is concerned, this book covers also the theories of the dynamic behaviour of the cutting process. Therefore, chatter is of great importance. The author explains the two present "Chatter Theories" in detail and enables the reader to perform his own calculations on process stability. I strongly recommend this book to all engineers and students of mechanical engineering who want to know the latest scientific results explained in a comprehensible way. This book is a must in the bookcase.

I had the great fortune of taking a course with Dr. Altintas at the University of British Columbia and I have to say that he is very thorough in his teaching methodology.

This was the textbook for the course and we covered most of it... I have to say that the book is very thorough and really teaches you in a practical way. The contents are very up-to-date and full with his own research results (which are cutting-edge). Also, the book's price has been kept very reasonable so that it is "student friendly".

A good overview for the busy business person

Do you know the proper way to enter and leave a limousine? You will if you read Dana May Casperson's book.

While including many of the basics you'd expect in an etiquette book, she also covers subjects such as:

* tea meetings * video conferencing * teleconferencing * chairing meetings * cultural courtesies * travel safety * physical disabilities * using a concierge

Interspersed throughout the text are Q & A's specific to the topic under discussion. One of the questions she deals with, often missing from books on manners, is tipping maids in hotels.

I have a special interest in this because I spent a year working as a hotel maid when I was in college. Sad to say that the majority of hotel guests do NOT leave tips. Casperson suggests $1 to $1.50 per person/day.

She also addresses those of us who work at home by suggesting we have a least 2 'knock 'em dead' outfits available at all times. Everyone will need to meet with a client or attend a lunch at some point, so this makes sense.

This suggestion is also good for anyone who has to travel for business. Having a few outfits you can pull together at a moment's notice and knowing that they fit properly and look good will make anything unexpected seem a breeze. This goes for men, too!

Another suggestion is to have an 'emergency kit' in your desk, briefcase, and/or car. This would consist of:

* extra socks or pantyhose * deodorant * toothbrush, toothpaste, & breath mints * a sewing kit/safety pins * makeup/shaving supplies/facial tissue * nail file/nail clippers/hand cream * hairbrush/comb * a small address book with phone numbers, email, etc. of clients, doctor & family member for emergencies

There's also an entire section about corporate gifting. Many companies do not allow employees to accept gifts or only allow gifts under a certain dollar amount.

This part of the book includes many suggestions for gifts as well as the proper use of your business name/logo on gifts.

There are a few places where I think she dropped the ball. I don't think it's a good idea to include your home address, phone and fax number in your email signature file. For those working at home, especially women, it could be dangerous.

I also disagree with her suggestion to take a hostess gift when you're staying at someone's home for a weekend. I think it's OK to bring something small like chocolates or a bottle of wine, just as you would when invited to dinner. But, it's always better to send a 'thank you' gift after you return home so you are able to select something appropriate to your host's home, interests, and tastes.

Is this the best book of business etiquette? Not in my opinion. But, I read & collect etiquette books so I'm biased.

Letitia Baldrige's New Complete Guide to Executive Manners is longer and more in-depth. As the social secretary for First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, she's also an in-demand speaker on subjects such as "Business Protocol" and "Executive Presence." Some find her old-fashioned, but she's my personal favorite.

If you want a good, quick, basic overview of what's-what for proper business manners, then Power Etiquette is a worthwhile book with over 180 pages of information.

A note: Casperson has absolutely no sense of humor. Both Letitia Baldrige and Miss Manner's have a breezy way of writing about etiquette that removes the stuffiness. Unfortunately, you couldn't find a spark of wit here if you had a map.

Reasonable Choice for Teaching Math

It's unfortunate that the other reviews are mostly attacks on Common Core, rather than actual reviews of the usefulness of this particular book in teaching math. The exact methods and problems used are created by textbook companies, so if you don't like them, hate on Addison-Wesley. Common Core just says what students should be able to do by the end of a grade, not HOW they must do it. (And, most states already had standards in place before Common Core, you just didn't realize it until they had a fancy name).

So I'that said, ll attempt to provide some useful information about THIS book.

Background:

We bought this book primarily because our school district uses the enVision curriculum, and I thought it would be easier for my daughter to transition from the 2nd grade in-school math curriculum to doing the 3rd math curriculum at home if we were using the familiar system. I also got a teacher's manual (on CD) and some games-or-something (also on CD), but we've never actually needed to use them because the student textbook provides decent explanation.

What's in the Book:

The curriculum for 3rd grade has 20 topics, each of which contains 4-10 lessons around a theme, such as Adding Whole Numbers (topic 2) or Solids and Shapes (topic 10) up through Dividing with 1-Digit Numbers (topic 19).

Each separate lesson begins with a short explanation of the concept the lesson is based on which explains the underlying concept, and shows how the answer to the sample problem is derived. It's usually very graphical. There are then usually 4-5 "Guided Practice" problems which are intended for the instructor to lead the child through, or discuss together. The last 2 of these are often asking the student to explain in their own words a key concept of the lesson, and perhaps a word problem. This is followed by a bunch of Independent Practice problems where the student works some equations, and then a set of word problems from which the student must derive the equation to be solved. Usually there are 1 or 2 problems that require a written explanation.

Once per topic there's usually an entire lesson devoted to problem solving. Each topic also has an assessment with 10-12 problems and then a page of reteaching problems.

I've found the lessons to be easy to use. It may, however, be useful to note that (a) I studied a lot of math myself in school; (b) I've taught 6th grade math using the "new" methodologies, so I have a sense where this is all going; and (c) I've formally studied the latest ideas on the teaching of math. So, in a nutshell, I may be coming at this from a different perspective than others.

Some noteworthy points:
* The assessments are really very short. I'd like them to have more problems. (Perhaps more are available on the teacher's manual which I have not accessed.) Also, the reteaching materials are pretty skimpy. Both of these issues could be helped by actually buying the workbook, which we did not do. We extended lessons by using Khan Academy online; this would also be a good source for any necessary reteaching if you were using this book.

* Also, spiraling curriculum is nice, but it does make it so that topics seem to jump around a lot. This wasn't a problem for my daughter, who actually liked jumping around, but might be for children who struggle more with math. But it also leads to the feeling like you're not going into depth in any one topic before moving on. I assume the idea is to build greater depth on each pass through an area, but since I don't have the 2nd or 4th grade curriculums, I can't really see the whole picture.

* It's worth noting that some lessons ask the students to make use of manipulatives which are not included with the textbook. We have made do without these or substituted toys we already own (fortunately we own a lot of blocks). There has been a fair amount of drawing of pictures, but comparatively far less than in other curriculums (IME, not as much as in Math Expressions). I'm personally a fan of diagrams and drawings to illustrate concepts, though they do take more time to complete than equations.

I could see us buying and using the 4th grade curriculum. It's not a bad curriculum at all. But after some research, I've decided we may switch to the Math in Focus version of Singapore Math for 4th grade math, because I've read it goes into more depth and requires more problem solving.

This is the ideal book for parents or tutors. The work is designed to coordinate with classwork but the pages are different than what the child will get at school. The only problem is the adult will have to find the answers unless they have access to a teacher's manual.

About the Author
Upon tiring of American girls soon after the release of his game book Bang, Roosh hit the road and set his antennae on foreign girls, quickly realizing his American game wasn't as effective abroad due to major cultural differences. For each new country he buckled down over the course of many months to study, date, and analyze the women.

Great advice and don't listen to the fake bad reviews

Well this book was very informative. I will definitely plan on going to Poland. Great advice and don't listen to the fake bad reviews. I actually called those fake reviewers what they are and amazon said it violated their terms. However I see that those reviewers can falsely call the author a rapist and that is ok. :/

Nice. Only that was Warsaw

I just couldn't read this thing. On the first few pages, he makes so many mistakes. It seems obvious that he really doesn't know much about Poland, about Polish history, and about Polish people and customs. What stopped me cold was his comment about Krakow being so destroyed in WWII and how the people meticulously re-created it. Nice. Only that was Warsaw, the most completely destroyed city in the world at the close of WWII. Krakow on the other hand, had been the center of the General Government and was relatively unscathed by WWII. If you're going to write a book about a place, do the research and get your facts straight.

An unblinking, matter-of-fact view of Polish women, culture, and certain cities in Poland. Plan on visiting Poland next year and will apply what's written. What Roosh wrote in this book and on his spot on and true to life and will pass this book on to a family member when they come of age.
