The best hypnosis book I have every read.

Fun With Hypnosis: The Complete How-To Guide by Svengali is, by far, the best book on hypnosis I have ever read.
It slowly shows the reader the history of hypnosis. It explains how it is used worldwide in the medical community. It then goes through testing; to relax the subject and to test if he/she responds to your commands.
After testing, he tells you how to induct a trance, deepen the trance, mulpitle routines you can do, all with great detail and with word for word scripts that get results. After those chapters, hedives into stage hypnotism and odds and ends, followed by a helpful self help section on self hypnosis for eliminationg and starting habits; for example stop smoking, dieting, and good study habits.

Very easily read book on the subject. Author gets right to the point and makes the point understandable. There is absolutely nothing missed in this volume. Plenty of technique, lots of routines, nothing left to the imagination.

Fun? Well...perfect your skills first

Just like any how to book, this one also has its conditions. Yes you can hypnotise someone, no doubt, but hypnotism is not as easy as ONE, TWO, THREE. Like any type of skill it needs to be practiced, practiced and practiced. Don't expect to read the book and go out and hypnotise someone, it really doesn't work like that and anyone that tells you any different is a fool. Don't believe me? Just ask a licensed hypnotherapist.

Deeply theoretical take on public policy. Students of public policy should find this book to be very helpful.

A Decent Anthology.

As this is the first anthology of public policy writings I've read, I can't comment on the quality here as compared to other writings. What I can say (after reading about 80% of the essays) is that this is like most anthologies: thorough, varied, and very poorly organized.
The essays here range from everything from philosophy of public policy (Dahl's article) to the tidbits of implementation (Sabatier & Mazmanian's article); from the really well-written (Majone and Wildavsky) to real snoozers (Rubin). With all this variance, the one thing I didn't get is any conflict in views presented. I'm no expert, but I'm sure that public policy experts don't actually agree on as much as these contributors seem to. I can't help getting the feeling that the editors views are amply reflected in these pages.
The other complaint is lack of structure. In particular, the section on "The Players" is put after "Making Public Policy." In retrospect, this made much of the latter-mentioned section harder to understand. Of course, this is easily remedied. If you do buy this collection (and I would hesitatingly reccomend it) read section 3 before section 2.

Uneven - there is a better alternative

I agree with the previous reviewer. The anthology is good in principle. Too few students read the original texts. Too many are fed with more or less adequate second-hand versions of what different scholars are saying.
BUT:
- While this anthology contains many classics, there is also a lot of less influential, or totally outdated texts that you should not waste your time on
- A good anthology requires good synthesizing chapters to make it more than the sum of its parts. The introductory chapters in this one are too brief and not very thrilling.
- The texts are too short. You only get little snippets.
- Many texts feel outdated, while much of the current litterature is missing.
There is a MUCH better public policy anthology which meets all these requirements: Daniel C. McCool (1995) "Public Policy Theories, Models, and Concepts" Prentice Hall. I would recommend that book instead, no doubt. Better, longer, more relevant and up-to-date texts, and very good comments by the editor. Have a look at that book instead of this one!

One summer right after a strip-mining induced flood, things come to a head. Lace's environmental activism ramps up; daughter Bant, working at a local motel, discovers her allegiance to the mountains and her sexuality; each of Lace and Jimmy's three sons (Corey, Jimmy and Dane) is touched in turn by the collapsing economy and environment. Lush descriptions of the landscape are matched with a hurtling stream-of-consciousness narration to great effect: one doubts neither the characters' voices nor their places in a very complex poverty. Timely and timeless fictional portrait of actual events. Terrifyingly beautiful writing.

This novel should be a must-read for anyone who believes we can continue to get energy from "clean coal." Besides exposing the reality of mountaintop removal mining (which is incredibly destructive to both the land and the people of Appalachia), it is beautifully written and emotionally moving. You get caught up in caring about people and their lives. And these are the kind of people usually dismissed as "hillbillies" or "poor white trash." Their strength and courage, and the depth of their attachment to the land their families have lived on for generations, is both awesome and painful to behold. Because in the end everything beautiful in their lives is destroyed by greed. Yet they persevere. The descriptions of flash floods and other disasters are so vivid, I felt as if I had lived through them myself. Terrifyingly beautiful!

This Is A Great American Novel !

I just finished reading this first novel by Ann Pancake and i am having to emotionally catch my breath. This
is an incredibly powerful and sadly beautiful story in which the ecologic and environmental violence of the mountaintop removal coal mining practices in WVa, Ky, and Tn, is interwoven with the story of a single family as it is formed, grows up, grows together, and grows apart. Her style is modern with multiple first person narratives and the final effect, for me, was to forge a chain of connection between the brutal macroscopic practice of leveling forests and mountains to get at the energy they cover in the most cost effective way, and the most intimate, innermost workings of the human heart and the american family. The early development seemed somewhat disparate, and it confused my poor brain for awhile, but as it unfolds, the relationship between the many vignettes becomes clear and the novel becomes a glowing whole.

I bought this novel for a class on Appalachian literature. It's extraordinarily beautiful and compelling, a haunting portrait of life under the strain of living with mountaintop removal. Unfortunately, the book that Amazon sent to me was missing the first 10 pages of the novel, as well any pages that come before the opening of the first chapter. While I loved the novel, I was disappointed in the quality of the product.

I purchased this book several years ago. I am a curtain wall and aluminum fenestration designer. I come back to this book over and over, with almost every project. The basic concepts and principles in terms of control of water, air, heat and humidity are here described, and then applied to different facade types: bricks, EIFS... My current favorite teaching resource

I don't know how I have taught reading to high school students without discovering this book before. It speaks to my particular passion - teaching struggling older students to read, understand what they read and enjoy what they read. I am writing and highlighting all over the pages of the book and have sticky notes marking many pages. I am on Spring Break and can hardly wait to get back and try some of the ideas with my most challenging class. It is absolutely never too late. I hate hearing teachers, especially special educators or reading teachers, say that students have to learn by third grade or they will never learn to read. That is a self-fulfilling prophecy that damages our students and creates new weapons for our legislators to use against teachers and students.

Useful for ALL teachers!

Literacy is very important in all subjects. If students don't understand what they're reading it's up to teachers to help provide tools that will help them. Tovani does a great job reaching to non English content teachers and gives great examples of how we can all help our students. My favorite take-away from this book is that reading comprehension becomes more difficult at the secondary level-that's when students need most help- ironically that's where a lot of teachers may have the "they can sink or swim" attitude. Tovani provides us with life savers in this easy to read and relate to book.

I love this book

I love this book. The strategies are incredible and have helped my students. The only issue I have is that the strategies in the book are geared towards a full reading class. I teach English, my school doesn't offer a reading class for students who aren't English Language Learners. My students need to learn how to read more effectively, and it would be nice if there were more classroom tips that could be embedded in other curriculum. Most of these chapters are structured around a full lesson that builds on another.

Maimonides, one of the preeminent personalities of medieval Jewish history, was a jurist, philosopher, expert in Jewish law, physician at the court of Saladin and a respected and dedicated communal leader. Given all that, it's difficult to understand the decision to present Maimonides's legacy primarily through the lens of his work as a physician. The 12th century was a time of stagnation in the history of medicine, and the author himself concedes that Maimonides contributed very little that was new or innovative to the field. By contrast, his jurisprudential magnum opus, the Mishne Torah, constituted a groundbreaking work in its own day and continues to be authoritative almost a millennium later. Although Nuland acknowledges this in a chapter on Maimonides's religious scholarship, it is dwarfed by the overarching concern with medicine—which seems the primary interest of Nuland, a clinical professor of surgery at Yale. The author does a serviceable job of stitching together this slight, popular biography of the larger-than-life Maimonides, but his writing is marred by an overwrought prologue and some glib generalizations. Reputedly the greatest figure in Judaism after his namesake, Moses Maimonides (1138 [not, as long supposed, 1135]-1204) was also a great physician. That second identity (he has a third as a philosopher, though no one now comprehends his Guide for the Perplexed, and a fourth as a judge) furnishes the surgeon--author of the National Book Award-winning How We Die (1994) entree into the life of this medieval intellectual titan. Like disproportionately many Jewish sons, Maimonides became a doctor in obedience, Nuland thinks, to the Lord's injunction to his people to choose life. In chapters centered on Maimonides' travels, three great books, and medical papers, Nuland argues that that obedience shows in more than Maimonides' medical career. Maimonides was devoted to sustaining the Jews as a people, and out of that, to human life generally. If he was otherwise a physician of his time, bound by the authority of Hippocrates and Galen, he believed that reason and observation should also inform prescription. Well written, easily read, useful summary of Maimonides.life

Five stars because fairly short, readable, and informative about a Giant figure of early medicine who contributed much to the ethics and personal commitment to healing his community's spiritual and physical malaise in an inspiring way. I knew little of him but his name until reading this book.

Intriguing and informative

All of Dr. Nuland's books are well worth reading. "Maimonides" is different from all of the other books I've read by him, in that it was narrative, and did not deal with a modern topic. However, it was extremely intriguing and informative. It gave a fascinating insight into both the cultural circumstances of that historical period, as well as into the personality and genius of a unique person. I believe that the author's special gift is to take complex and confusing information and synthesize it into a form which is not only meaningful but fun to read. I am reading Nuland's books more for inspiration and enjoyment than for anything else, and I have been extremely blessed by all of them.

Dr. Maimonides

Dr. Nuland "biography" of Maimonides focusses mostly on the sage as a physician, with much of the rest of his life sketchy at best. In fact, the first chapter virtually ignores the subject and instead describes the author's views on why so many Jews became physicians over the centuries. That being said, Dr. Nuland's book is well written, gives historical insights into medicine in the 12th century period, and is easy to read. I have not read any of the other biographies of Maimonides, several of which are cited by Dr. Nuland, and therefore cannot judge whether the paucity of details of Maimonides life presented other than medical is a intentional or the result of the actual absence of data.
