delightful and lovely!!
By Alina
found a copy of this in my attic a few years ago, and ended up giving it to a girl I babysat over the summer, so I just had to buy myself a copy. this book is such a lovely gem! some might say it's too much, but I just adore all the loving detail and reading this book is like enjoying traditional afternoon tea in a spring garden in full bloom, complete with friends and easy cheerful conversation. thank you so much for this glimpse back into my childhood!
also, the movie partly based on this book, (and aptly renamed The Secret of Moonacre) is also a dreamy lovely thing! the plot has been altered somewhat, but it doesn't ruin anything, especially since they didn't take the original name of the book. why doesn't this happen anymore in modern cinema!! it would make everything so much easier, and help loving fans see it as a different version of their favorite characters and keep it separate from the book!

Wonderful fariy tale for any age
By Radar626
What a wonderful story! I saw this book on the the "Customers Also Viewed" scroll, and was curious after reading JK Rowling's comment that this book was one of her favorites, I really wanted to read this book. I have to say that her comment calling this book "scary and romantic in parts and had a feisty heroine" was spot on. It wasn't until I received the book that I realized it was a tale from around 80 years ago, but a tale so charming that it would be very popular today as well.

Though the setting and language is a bit old fashioned, it wasn't difficult to lose myself in the story. The author created a setting so incredibly detailed that it leaves the reader with a definite pang of regret that the story is fiction and not someplace someone could actually visit. While there are supernatural elements included, they are no so farfetched that a reader would have to suspend belief in order to finish the story. Included with the supernatural aspect is a bit of religion, but like the supernatural it isn't so heavily written that the writer alienates anyone reading this book. Everything is so perfectly woven together that the story would have felt like something was missing if the author hadn't included parts from each.

The final outcome is full of twists and connections that most readers will be enjoyably surprised to not have figured out on their own. The end of the book wrapped things up nicely, but I did find myself wishing that this could have been an ongoing series like "Anne of Green Gables." I would have loved to have read more of the adventures of Maria and Robin and the rest of the characters in the story.

A less scary book from a different time. It can be comforting.

BTW... love the one reviewer that called this "child-porn" - BIT of an exageration. There is s very non-sexual puppy-friendship between the boy and girl that is never explicit because there is nothing to be explicit about. To me it is more like a seperated brother and sister that have been reunited and then adopted by the same mom... just my take. It's a 1940's escapist take on a mid-1800's story - rather unreal and dreamlike on many levels. Yes... everything is sweet - even the mysteries aren't very scary. My kids and grand kids read books from all eras and places. They understand that different times and places were not always better, or wrong... just different. For a girl child of 8 - 11, I would consider this ideal. Of course you never allow your kids to read something you haven't - that's just common sense. I'm sure most modern girls would think it silly to get married so young.

I read this at 14 years old when babysitting in 1970. I LIKED the fact at the time that nothing was very scary as my life then was full of horror and violence. I liked the idea that somewhere there was a little stone cottage with nice people that would love me. I am now in my 50's, FINALLY found the book (couldn't remember the name of it) and am enjoying it again. I love JK Rowling, Terry Pratchett and Eoin Mcnamee's books for teens. VERY exciting and funny - I gift them all the time. This is not THAT kind of "kids are strong and the world is even MORE exciting that you think" book.

I will enjoy "reading" this someday to a smaller child - leaving out some of the timing of the marraige and talking about times that couriousity is good and safe and times that courioustity can be dangerous and bad. We are an infinitly courious family but understand that should be tempered with common sense. There are times you should NOT look in the dark alley, start an argument or think your parents are idiots. Oddly enough... really.
