Spanish is not my best language...

...it's not even a close third, after my native English and then Japanese. So it's very helpful to have this book as a major resource on Sundays when I am called upon to preach in Spanish. He interprets the passages in the way that I usually do and his homily is only a little longer than it would be if I were to write it and then translate from Engish to Spanish. Usually that is my process, but when I'm stuck and short of time, I cheat a little with this book.

Kindle Version is Error-Ridden

This review is not about the story (which I enjoyed), but focuses only on the editing of the Kindle version. Long sections of dialogue are missing most of their punctuation, leaving numerous run-on sentences. I had to work hard to decipher when one sentence ended and another began. It's as if someone was transcribing hurriedly from the book, and not stopping to put in the punctuation.

In one section near the end, it seemed as if basic plot information was also missing. I could make no sense of it, and finally just moved on. I have not seen this problem with Alcott's other works in Kindle. It's hard to complain about something that was free, so I'll just say, if you want the gist of the story, this is fine. But if you want a smoother read, it would be worth paying for a better version.

One of my favorite's from Louisa May Alcott

Lovely story, for adults and children. I recommend that you read "Eight Cousins" first as this is the sequel to that story. I love the story of Rose and Uncle Mac and all her cousins and I still get a little weepy when I get to the chapter, "Alas, for Charlie!" I've read this book about several times over the last 20 some years. It has a beautiful conclusion and goes to show that a book that was written over a hundred years ago still can be so beloved today. I also recommend "An Old Fashioned Girl" by Louisa May Alcott if you like this story.

Better Every Time You Read It

The sequel to Eight Cousins, Rose In Blue follows the cousins as they grow up. Written as cleanly and delicately as Alcott's other works, we follow Rose, Mac, Charlie, Phoebe and the rest of the family on Aunt Hill through adolescence to their adult success, and it's every bit as engaging and heart-warming as Eight Cousins was.

Even after decades of life, and a half dozen reads or so, this book still makes me tear up in places, and I am not ashamed to admit that in the least. The book recalls a time and culture that were cleaner and simpler in many ways than what we have now, and turning the pages is like going back in time--I have so many happy memories tied up with this book, and others I enjoyed as a young girl.

You won't find all the tools modern authors use to hold attention here--violence, sex, bad language or unnatural, ridiculous plots and sub-plots. What you will find is simple, clear language, a smooth presentation of the values and morals of the authoress' times, and very simple, human characters that worry about the only things that are really important in life, when you come right down to it.

Louisa May Alcott's books should be the first books you introduce your child to--because the world (and the people in it) still need the values she writes about so naturally, and you'd be hard pressed to find those values in any of the "modern" children's books on the market. And for adults--why not take a trip back into your childhood and enjoy a simple, well written book again?

Carlos Fuentes, born in Panama in 1928, has received many awards for his accomplishments as a novelist, essayist, and commentator, among them the Cervantes Prize. He is the author of more than twenty books, most recently (in the United States) Inez. Other Fuentes titles from FSG include Old Gringo, The Death of Artemio Cruz, and The Good Conscience. He divides his time between Mexico City and London.

En el libro Aura, el autor Carlos Fuentes hace una crítica de la época colonial, cuando los mexicanos no tenían la libertad. Fuentes publicó este libro en 1965. El cuento tiene lugar en México. Un hombre joven, Felipe Montero, ve un anuncio para un trabajo que parece ser para él y solamente él. Felipe va a una entrevista con la mujer vieja que está ofreciendo el trabajo. Él acepta el trabajo en la mansión colonial después de ver los ojos de la sobrina bonita de la mujer. Felipe trabaja en la mansión, y no tiene permiso para salir. Él nota muchas cosas raras, que incluyen una conexión extraña entre Aura, la sobrina, y su tía, la Sra. Llorente. Él quiere ayudar a Aura para que ella pueda escapar el control de su tía. Felipe también se siente una conexión con Aura. Una noche Felipe y Aura hacen el amor, pero Felipe ve a la Sra. Llorente en el cuarto después del acto. Aura

Aura is a short story that is written beautifully, capturing the magic and horror of an old widow living with her niece and the secret that binds the two.
The plot is fairly basic, as there isn't really much time to get deep into any of the characters. There are only four, although that is debatable as one is only known through diary recollections. The prime focus of the story is Senora Consuelo, the ageing widow, as the young historian, Felipe Montero, hired to re-assemble her dead husband's memoirs learns more and more about their dark past. Felipe becomes obsessed with the ethereally beautiful niece, Aura, his dreams are filled with feverish images of her and him, together, declaring their love.
The novella is written in an interesting style, using 2nd person perspective (You did this, then you did that), and it works well. It means that we never really get an insight into Felipe's thoughts, but at the same time we only experience things through his eyes. The writing itself alternates between dark imagery involving religion, flowers, cats, and the house the story takes place within and obsessive beauty and fragility, as when Aura is described or mysterious things are occurring. Particularly haunting are the descriptions of the gloomy house filled with the refuse of fifty years of isolation.
The ending of the story wasn't expected, or at least, while I had an idea of what was going to occur, Fuentes took my expectations and extended them to a direction I hadn't predicted and was horrified with - but in the good way. This is a very dark story, and while there are flashes of beauty, these are generally shadowed by the somber tone and melancholy whisperings present throughout the novella. Highly recommended.

Un relato lleno de magia

"Aura" ha causado controversia recientemente en Mexico, donde un grupo conservador trato de prohibirla como lectura escolar para adolescentes. Me toco leerla cuando fui alumna de un colegio catolico muy conservador... y nos encanto! Mas de 15 años despues, la relei y me sigue encantando. Para empezar, la narracion es en segunda persona, muy original! Te agarra desde el principio y no la puedes soltar. Desde la pagina uno, nos convertimos en protagonistas de un misterio que nos llama por nuestro nombre y no tenemos mas remedio que responder al llamado. Somos invitados a la casa de una anciana y su bella sobrina, una casa llena de gatos, de figuras de santos, de rituales, de misterios, y de amores olvidados que quieren renacer, cargados de sensualidad. Es un libro muy cortito (mi edicion tiene 62 paginas), pero da mucho para descubrir. El protagonista vive una historia de amor con una de las mujeres de la casa (o con las dos?) y durante ese tiempo, vemos referencias a tradiciones ya casi erradicadas de Mexico, como la santeria y el vudu. Todo mezclado con la influencia francesa que ayudo a moldear la "personalidad" de la Cd de Mexico y por supuesto, con la tradicion catolica tan fuertemente arraigada en este pais. En fin, una profesora mia hizo su tesis de maestria sobre AURA y dice que el mensaje de la obra es que solo en la medida en que las personas y los paises podamos recordar nuestro pasado, es que podremos aceptar el presente y mejorarlo.

There were so many things in the book that Paul wrote that we relate to and have observed ourselves. But most importantly, I value the way it shows respect & acceptance for kids with special needs comes across." This is the gratitude expressed by parents about Paul's e-book; many families have become aware of the Tomatis Method & Listening Fitness Training only because of Paul Madaule's eloquent and wholehearted writing; Paul inspires and guides parents to find avenues and expertise in the above sound stimulation methods while helping them to make a significant difference in their children's lives. Guide for parents with kids who learn idfferently

Paul Madaule has written a book that parents will love. It tells about his own experiences both as an LD kid, and a teacher of Tomatis listening. The work applies to kids with learning disabilities, and all kids on the spectrum. There are now more autistic each year (one in every 154 births as of 2007). For a description of Tomatis work as it applies to adults there are other volumes.

I think the present work is the best in English for parents with kids in difficulty with learning, self-regulation, attention and all the rest of the issues associatied with auditory processing problems.

Auditory processing problems are real and often are misdiagnosed or missed completely. Paul Madaule demostrates the vital role our listening plays in our lives including its impact on reading and how simply one can overcome these challenges by doing a simple program of Auditory Training. Great handbook for every student of religion

I have two degrees from private Christian institutions in North America and am currently engaged in PhD studies in a public university in the UK. I recently came across this book when I was surveying my library's collection of texts on academic writing and critical thinking. None of them stood out like this one.

This book highlights many of the traps that a person of religious conviction (as myself) would have when writing essays or theses for a secular, pluralistic institution. In fact, I would say that it is very helpful even for many students in Bible colleges and seminaries. This small handbook has four short but helpful chapters:

1. The Essentials of Essay Writing, for Students New to Religious Studies
2. Approaching Ancient Texts
3. Some Finer Points of Writing for More Experienced Students
4. The Hallmarks of Bad Scholarship: Considerations for Advanced Students

There are many things that are assumed to be universal truths about academic writing, but there are very few places that really identify and articulate those assumptions. This is what you find in the first chapter. The next chapter helps to highlight the critical eye for texts that are sacred and traditionally understood as authoritative. The third has a really helpful section on differences in writing styles between British English, Canadian English and American English (another excellent guide for American English is The Elements of Style: 50th Anniversary Edition). The author closes his final chapter with helpful guides for avoiding those no-no's that we all do in our writing.

Another book that I find as incredibly helpful, but that comes from a different angle is: A Little Exercise for Young Theologians. This other book trains students of Christian theology to humbly bring what is learned in the academia into the pews.
